I truly believe Murphy is a once-in-a-decade talent, and his graduation from the team should not be taken lightly in our predictions for next year's defensive strengths.

Murphy may be a great player, but Peter Kalambayi was ranked higher than Miles Jack as a recruit.  I'm fully expecting Kalambayi to be a force as a RS Frosh and in so being, help Stanford fans realize Stanford has reached elite program status by being able to re-load every year.

This is where I am. I'm just not super concerned about our ability to replace guys in the front seven, at least with reasonable attrition (if the entire starting front seven left I'd be a bit concerned, though). I think that part of the defense will be fine.

Where I'm less optimistic is the secondary. If both safeties leave I think we'll see a downgrade. But I don't know, I bet none of us were expecting Richards and Reynolds to develop quite the way they have.

I'm not talking about high school rankings or eye tests.  Murphy has some unique physical gifts and the work ethic to make it all happen in the backfield.  Stanford has whiffed on touted recruits as well, and maybe Kalambayi will be a good player, but it's not immediately apparent that he'll ever measure up to Murphy's impact.  For one, Kalambayi's gonna have to grow 3 inches.

It doesn't seem too likely that R&R will leave early.  They are both really solid players on the college level, but they are not elite playmakers that would be drafted on day one or two.

I never expected Reynolds to be as good as he has been, but I kind of did expect Richards would be.  He looked like a very good player on his Folsom High team and played against the top competition in California.

Hoffpauir seems ready to step in for Richards, but I'm just not sure what Stanford has at FS after Reynolds.  Therefore, IMO, Reynolds is the most key defensive player eligible to be an early exit that Stanford has, after Henry Anderson, who is probably most important.
