Alex Carter Injury? -
doubledub - 11-19-2013
Did anyone else notice that he was not in during the last defensive series against USC? Ronnie Harris was in when Kessler threw that pass out to Agholor for that big gain -- against Harris. Immediately prior to Amanam getting beat on the slant...
Any injury or was that just a coach's decision?

I noticed the same thing and asked the same question on Saturday. WIM thought that Carter was shaken up earlier in the drive.

Let's see what Coach Shaw says during the regular Tuesday press conference this afternoon.

Is there a regular press conference this week? Isn't it Guardsman luncheon.

Just as clarification, it wasn't actually Harris getting beat on the last drive. They completed 2 balls to Agholor on that drive, one was against Lyons (to set up the 4th and 2) and the other against Amanam (to get them into FG range). They did try a deep ball to Marquise Lee where Harris could have been called for PI if the ball had been thrown on target.Â
That part of our defense was a little strange to me -- seemed like Marquise Lee was matched up with our nickel backs for a good part of the night. If I was the offensive coordinator for SC, I would have been licking my chops at this.Â
In other threads, the question has been raised if we will still be an elite defense. The secondary in my mind is going to be the key. This seems like it has been traditionally the hardest for us to recruit, particularly the corners. We have had a few NFL corners over the years, but far more linebackers and linemen have made it. And it was only when we got big physical athletic corners when we really could match up with Oregon well. I'm really hoping that this year's class (which is heavy in the secondary) pans out, and allows us to reload.

From today's presser via David Lombardi - "Stanford will keep Tyler Gaffney, Ty Montgomery, and Alex Carter out of practice today, but all are expected back in practice tomorrow . . . . Zach Hoffpauir will be back at practice today and may be available for Big Game . . . . And for now, Jordan Williamson's status is 'questionable' Shaw should know more tomorrow."

Was there ever official word on Williamson? He kicked FGs against Oregon but didn't play last week. That blocked FG...

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Williamson just got a fresh medical diagnosis and that he could be back soon. Maybe somebody can corroborate that.

Williamson is a senior kicker...Ukropina is still green. Plus, this wasn't the long bomb attempt that the blocked Oregon FG attempt was.

Didn't we just sign another kicker last year? Or was that Ukropina?

Yep, but he's just a walk-on. Also there's a kid from Illinois who's walking on in 2014.

Williamson is a junior wrt athletic eligibility. He has one more year. Ukropina is a redshirt frosh.

Carter was concussed and won't be playing against the 59ers.

If Carter doesn't leave the game, Stanford wins in OT against U.S.C. The last drive only worked for them because Carter was out. Another painful anomaly of an event in an absurd series of them that all had to happen (blocked FG, pick at 10, Carter injury) for Stanford to lose a game it had no business losing. Yes, I'm still bitter.Â
Hopefully Carter will be back for dead fake girlfriends, but couldn't have a better game to get Stanford's depth CBs some quality playing time, than against Cal.
