Thanks for your entertaining summaries as always, Garvin, but I think you\'re confusing your Baldwin brothers.  Doug plays WR for Stanford, Stephen was in The Usual Suspects, and Alec is the most popular Republican on TV and fictional former beau of Condoleezza.
That last drive was a gut check and it showed why everyone is so excited about Andrew Luck.  That was near perfect execution on the 1 minute drill, combined with a game where he went quiet 20 for 24, nearly 12 yards per attempt, 40 yards rushing, and 1 bone-jarring, possibly game-saving tackle.
Great game by Talyor other than the fumbles.  I need to watch the last one on TV, since it was not at all apparent from my end zone seats.
gostanford says Whitaker had never made a game winning field goal before tonight, in High School or college.
From last season, only the Notre Dame game compares to this one in terms of down to the wire excitement with the good guys pulling out the win in the end.  And darn few wins in my tenure as a Stanford fan come close.

That personal foul was obvious.  The second Baldwin was hit I screamed for joy!  Moments later the flag was sent skyward.  There was absolutely no doubt.  Baldwin is short and the defender had picked him up off the ground and started walking him back.

The shot was cheap and oh so helpful.  It stopped the clock and gave Stanford a 19 yard play, rather than a 4 yard play with the clock rolling.

Now watching my DVR of the game.  The ABC guys guessed very early on that the game might go down to one of those "last one with the ball wins" type deals.

Wow!  Quite an amazing call!

Stephen always was lesser of Baldwin brothers - Redrum - 10-09-2010

His brother Alec always got all the breaks and great roles.  So if Stephen Baldwin took a cheap shot on the chin from some dog-a**ed Trojan,  he probably is used to it.  Doug Baldwin, on the other hand, got a key go-ahead TD and a chance to jump around at midfield when the game was over.

We\'re going to miss Doug Baldwin quite a bit next year. For all of the talk a while back about the Coming Defensive Tackle Crisis (Stanford\'s version of climate change?), I think the Coming Wide Receiver Crisis could be just as bad: R. Whalen and Doug Baldwin graduate after this year.

I\'m not too worried about WR next year. Patterson, Roberts, and Turell were very highly rated out of high school, and we\'ll still have Owusu and Griff Whalen. Baldwin and R. Whalen have been good players for quite a while, but I just don\'t see their departure derailing the passing game. Plus, fleener is arguably our best downfield weapon and he\'s back.

I\'m a little concerned Patterson hasn\'t broken through yet. He looked like TO in his high school tape. I don\'t know what the problem is. It\'s too bad McGillicuddy can\'t get a 7th year so we could switch him to WR.

It was quite a game - JohnR34231 - 10-10-2010

Great offense, or no-so-great defense? I suppose you could argue either way, but with two future #1 NFL QB draft picks pitching, I\'ll take the former.

It became obvious pretty early that the game stood an excellent chance of going down to the last possession. On USC\'s last drive, I wasn\'t worried about whether they were going to score or not; I knew they were. I was just hoping we\'d get the ball back with enough time to do something. Fortunately, there just was.

If you enjoyed this shootout (and what Stanford fan wouldn\'t?), stay tuned. There are a few more coming down the pike, against people like Nick Fowles and Jake Locker.

Quote:I\'ve been watching Stanford football for 39 years. In that time, there are five games that ended in truly immortal fashion, with Stanford comeback victories on the final play: The 1974 Big Game and Mike Langford\'s 50-yard field goal. John Hopkins\' 37-yarder at the 1990 Big Game. Sound-of-gun touchdown passes against Colorado and USC in the 1990s.

In 1989, Stanford scored 18 unanswered points, including a 2-point conversion, an onside kick, and a game winning field goal to defeat Oregon 18-17. It was a home game in September before classes even started.

I don\'t know if Locker can engineer a shootout.  I think of lots of passes and high-scoring when I think shootout; Locker\'s running will necessarily run the clock more than his passing will.

Foles and Threet from UA and ASU, respectively, will be shootout threats.  I don\'t think they\'re as good as Barkley though, but Foles will have a stud RB in Grigsby backing him up.

OTOH, Arizona did just lose to Oregon State.  I\'ll need to see what happened in that game.
