Seems Avery Sebastian is out for the year with a torn achilles:

Sad to hear, with his previous scary concussion injury. He also seemed like a nice kid and was fun to watch play.

Cal's already relatively thin defense is taking some haymakers right now.
SS Sebastian is now out for the season.
SLB Khari Fortt sustained a concussion in the first quarter against NU. Don't know how long he'll be out.
DE Brennan Scarlett, probably Cal's best pass rusher, is on the verge of being ruled out for the season with a nagging I think knee injury.
MLB Nick Forbes is suffering from a back injury that is keeping him out, and has no timetable for return.
DT Mustafa Jalil sat out the NU game with injury.
Each of these guys was a 4 star recruit, and Sebastian was sensational (and the best Cal defender against NU) before he was injured Saturday.
The Bears were playing RS Frosh in their first college game at MLB and SLB, rather than experienced Juniors. Sebastian was lost early in the game, and there was no pass rush from Scarlett. It's not looking very good for the guys in blue and gold. With Tedford, the season would be lost in week 1. It will be fascinating to see how the team performs with so much adversity with new and by all accounts, stronger leadership.

Fortt will be back this week; Scarlett has a hand injury that has plagued him for some time - no timetable for his return; Jalil - no timetable; Bigelow suffered a concussion v. NU - he is questionable for Saturday.

After making my post, a Rivals reporter implied there is a possibility both Forbes and Scarlett could be ruled out for the season. Combined with Sebastian's loss, that would be at least half of the best defenders on that defense; best pass rusher, experienced MLB, and best playmaker in the secondary. It's bad enough to lose the talent, but then you have to play really inexperienced personnel, and then they will get tired by the pace of the offense, putting even less ready players on the field, and well, it's just ugly from there.

Yep. Sadly, injuries are part of the game. Every team must deal with them. No excuses; next man up.Â

Ugh, that means the Big 10 will likely get two whacks against the Pac 12...I was hoping for a moderate win over NW and a tightly contested win over tOSU.Â

I don't think the Ca
l games really give the B1G any bragging rights, after all, it's one of the PAC's worst teams against two of the B1G's best. ASU-Wisconsin and UCLA-Nebraska are far more important for comparison purposes.

kal was playing Northwestern pretty close. I was hoping for an eye-opening upset. After seeing E Wash's score over Oregon State (anyone explain that one yet?) and how it took UW til the 4Q to finally break open the game against Boise St., some good news would have been nice. WSU wasn't expected to beat Auburn, but the score was respectable. Connor Halliday's stat line, however, was not (heyyyy 3 INTs).

Disagree with the notion that Washington's performance against Boise State wasn't particularly impressive because it took so long to take them to the woodshed. Boise State is a very good football team, not some body bag outfit.

If you have a taste for Kal schaedenfreude, watch the Kal v OSU game. Braxton learned how to pass during the offseason.

Boise State seemed to have fallen off a bit last season, and I'm not convinced that it was just a one-year hiccup. But I haven't been following them closely lately.
