Sounds bogus to me. Intra-computer email on timesharing systems existed long before 1976. Maybe 1976 could have been the date of some kind of internet email first, but why would they go to Zot's to do whatever it was? And how did they get online from Zot's beer garden anyway? Did they borrow Zot's phone line and run a long cable out to the beer garden to hook up their dial-up terminal?

Aha. The actual Zot's first was the first packet radio data transmission across two networks using TCP, according to this web page: http://johnnyryan.wordpress.com/2009/06/09/zotts/
That makes more sense -- I could definitely see driving a van to Zot's to test a packet radio setup.
(Packet radio was a predecessor of today's WiFi, cellular telephone/data services, etc.)

I am glad to hear about this piece of history.
In 1977 I watched as friends hacked into the ARPA net from LOTS and played chess on the MIT computer. I have thought about that moment often in the years since the internet began to dominate our lives. But the ARPAnet dated from 1969, so it was somewhat old hat by 1977.
I believe it was the same year (or 1978) when I visited SAIL with my computer science girl friend of the time and saw a cool game on a big round screen. She called it "Asteroids." The Atari hit came out in 1979--what the association was with SAIL I never knew.

That's an interesting question; wish I knew the answer. Asteroids has some family resemblance to the earlier Spacewar. Wikipedia thinks Asteroids was an original development by Atari, not a clone of a game developed on larger machines in the ARPAnet community (as Spacewar was). If you were playing the game at SAIL before Atari released Asteroids, maybe Wikipedia is wrong, or maybe your memory is a bit off and either you were playing Spacewar, or the date was a bit later and you were playing an Asteroids clone that someone wrote for SAIL. Sorry, this is all just speculation.
I remember playing a version of Asteroids on a Stanford computer when I was a grad student there in the mid-80's, but I don't remember what computer it was on. Might have been a Xerox Alto; there definitely was an Asteroids clone for the Alto. I also remember playing Spacewar quite a bit earlier at MIT with my older brother. It was played on a round screen, at least at MIT.

Zing, got me. Of course they would go to Zot's to test packet radio. But going to Zot's to send the first email ever wouldn't make a lot of sense -- they'd do that in the lab where the computers are, then maybe go to Zot's to celebrate.
