Seems they're down two important linebackers:

that's pretty bad for them considering Whiteside was kicked off the team and I believe McCain is suspended due to grades. Jason Gibson is coming off an injury too. They really can't afford any injuries at LB this season.

First, McCain is a DE. Second, he has not been ruled in or out, but is practicing.
Wilkerson, though a highly rated recruit, never did anything at Cal and was always injured. Cal will be fine at LB without Wilkerson.
The starting three is going to be pretty good, and there is OK depth. DL and DB depth will be an issue for Cal, but the projected starters include eight 4-star recruits, so the D will be the team's strength. But the fact the offense won't let them get much rest, will probably weaken the team's strength.

well Cal is running some bizarre 3-4/4-3 defense this year so I don't think McCain will always be playing up on the line, at least from what I've read about their new defensive scheme. I do see he's listed on the roster so I guess he isn't suspended anymore. Lucky for them. And yeah, they don't have much at RB, not a great o-line, and a true freshman at QB. Going to be a brutal season for them.

This is where you lose me. Brendan Bigelow is a supreme talent with incredible speed who was chronically underutilized by Tedford. Daniel Lasco has shown well in camp, and Khalfani Muhammed is the two-time California state 100M champion. They are just fine at RB. They didn't have any of these guys in Spring. The OL and a True Frosh (even if he did have a Spring) QB, backed up by a RS Frosh, is the biggest area of concern. They will be throwing to some pretty talented WRs, but they will rotate 15 guys (says the coach), and the top talent stops after the first team, IMO.
I'm predicting a 5-7 record, with an outside shot at 6-6.

Jeff Tedford was fired after a 3-9 season. That is strong evidence alone to suggest he was making poor decisions and not managing the program well. Throw in APR and GSR numbers, lousy strength and conditioning, add in player favoritism, and it's easy to see how Bigelow not being used enough (and properly), was just another example of how lousy a coach Tedford devolved into after the Oregon State game in 2007.

Maybe I'm wrong but I am skeptical Bigelow is big enough to be an everydown back. Muhammed is even smaller. And I haven't heard anything about Lasco since they signed him. I'd take Remound Wright over all 3 and I doubt he'll play much this season. But just my opinion. We'll see once the season starts.

Broussard is a loss; Wilkerson is no loss. Bigelow was underutilized by JT. He has NFL talent. I look for a big year from him if the OL can create some space. Bottom line...
I agree with OutsiderFan. 5-7.Â
P.S. Who is Remound Wright?

if you have to ask that then you're on the wrong message board.

Wright is a reserve running back from Indiana. Last year, as a redshirt freshman, in very limited playing time, he had 81 rushing yards and 1 TD. He will be Stanford's #3, #4, or #5 running back this year.

Bigelow was the one Cal player that scared me last year. Allen was good as well, but getting him the ball meant Maynard had to be involved.

I recall reading that he was "struggling to handle the playbook" (or something to that effect).
"Struggling to handle the playbook" - Redrum - 08-21-2013
Does that mean he
fumbled it just carrying it to team meetings?
I think, with his speed, Bigelow will do well in a spread offense, particularly if his WRs can block a bit and if the fast passing game loosens up a defense.

Garvin - Bigelow is 5'10" 187. I'm not certain where the "too small" started but it is wrong. I don't recall Darrin Nelson or Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions version) being too small and they were slighter in stature than Bigelow.
As for why he didn't play in JT's O, the word is that he could not digest the Manhattan-sized directory that JT called his playbook. While a massive playbook worked for guys like Marshawn Lynch, it didn't work for guys like Bigelow.

On the other hand, when Teyo Johnson switched from quarterback to wide receiver at Stanford, some guys on the team joked about him running "ragged routes," which I always took to be a playbook reference.
I think reading between the lines of 71Bear's post, considering Tedford had a well-chronicled history of playing favorites, and making excuses why the better players didn't play, the "playbook" reason is a point of sarcasm. That was just the most convenient reason to give that sounded better than "Sofele and Anderson are Seniors." There was no good reason for limiting Bigelow's carries and use. Just like there was no reason not to use DeSean Jackson on crossing routes or as a KOR guy. Or no reason to play a QB with a broken ankle over a healthy RS Frosh. Or no reason to play walk-on Justin Moye over much more talented Soph. Zack Follett. And on and on...
