Should be a really big game for Griff Whalen. If he can show himself well, he has a good chance to get a roster spot.Â

Man Fleener has had a lot of drops so far in the preseason, he really needs to work on that, he has a brobdingnagian opportunity with the other tight end, Allen, out. I'm guessing Pep will work with him on that...

To be fair that wasn't the easiest catch. But you're right, he should've had it.

That's gotta be the funniest TD pass for Luck... Bad throw, gets really lucky...

I haven't laughed that hard at a football play since the buttfumble.

Luck just dropped in a perfect TD pass.Â

I was impressed with Hilton getting his foot in the right spot. I know that all NFL WRs can do that stuff, but it impresses me a lot.

Beautiful throw, beautiful catch, I think that combo is going to be lethal this year. Hopefully Wayne, Hayward-Bay, and Hilton will be good WR's for Luck, to go along with the sophomore tight ends. It would be nice if that O-line could help tho, they don't rush very well, and Luck gets hit way to much for a franchise guy...

Ugh, Fleener, you have to turn your head around at least...

Looks like he just got undercut by his QB there too...

We'll never know what route he was supposed to run, but it's never good to get hit between the numbers on your back. Even if that was Hasselbeck's fault, Fleener looks like an idiot. Although I suppose Pep and co know which it is, which is what matters.

Oh know, it's his fault on the throw, I meant after the interception he literally got undercut by his QB trying to make a tackle, he's listed as having a light knee sprain. What a bad preseason for Fleener...

Yeah, watching this game has me wondering if he's going to end up as a bust. Really not a good showing, at all.
And Griff was out, and the only time I heard Howell's name was when he didn't end up getting called for PI. Not a great showing for the ex-Cardinal*, all considered.
*What's the plural here? I mean, it's shorthand for "players who used to play for the Cardinal", but saying "ex-Cardinals" makes me feel funny.

Cardinal is both the singular and plural form, correct?

I suppose, but that just sounds awkward to me. I guess saying "ex-Cardinal players" clears up everything and isn't much more work.

Cardinal is singular.

In this instance, it's best to recast the sentence, if you're referencing more than one team member:
Not a great showing for the former Cardinal players, all considered.

I thought Cardinal was a collective noun, meaning it can be plural or singular depending on context.
Forgive me, Kathy for challenging you on grammar again. I'm feeling brave right now, buzzing on a bottle of Russian River's Supplication.

A fantastic choice! Although I prefer their Temptation.

Again, I refer you to the AP Stylebook, sports section (pertinent rule in bold):
Quote:COLLECTIVE NOUNS Nouns that denote a unit take singular verbs and pronouns: class, committee, crowd, family, group, herd, jury, orchestra, team.
However, team names such as the Jazz, the Magic, the Avalanche and the Thunder take plural verbs.
Many singular names take singular verbs: Boston is favored in the playoffs. The Cardinal is in the NCAA tournament.
