OT: some interesting comments from Brittney Griner - washingtonismoney - 05-18-2013

She says it was an "unwritten law" from the coaches not to discuss her sexuality publicly:
Quote:"It was a recruiting thing," Griner said during an interview with ESPN The Magazine and espnW. "The coaches thought that if it seemed like they condoned it, people wouldn't let their kids come play for Baylor."

As sad as it is the coaches were probably right. I mean, doing that was wrong and they absolutely shouldn't and I hope they get a lot of shit over it, but there are a lot of ignorant assholes out there, and parents who are attracted to religious schools seem even more likely to be less accepting about someone's homosexuality.

If Brittney Griner knew she was gay early in high school (which the article says she did, and I don't see any reason to doubt it), then I'm very puzzled by her decision to attend Baylor.  If I were gay, Baylor is one of the last places I'd want to go.  (Of course, one might point out that even though I'm not gay, Baylor is still one of the last places I'd want to go, but that's beside the point.)

Good basketball program
Are their D1 womens' basketball programs that aren't welcoming to gay athletes?
Close to home
Despite Baylor's rep, the college kids at a school that big aren't going to make a big deal of it.  Baylor students actually have a chip on their shoulder about the Baptist label.
Despite Waco's rep, it's in the Houston, Dallas, Austin/San Antonio triangle, which in Texas is a bit better than being outside of that triangle.

Sez you.

All your major universities are in that triangle...sorry Texas Tech.  If you want to be in Texas, that triangle is the place to be.

oman, did you go to the Dallas Buck/Cardinal coaches swing?  I didn't end up going to either Houston or Dallas...both too far for a day trip last week.

No, I am the most uninvolved living Stanford grad in the history of the universe.

No national championship tickets for you.

Actually oman, I have a few friends who rival your uninvolvedness :p
