Watching his debut. He sure is impressing. 3 TDs already. Very strong arm. Very accurate. Stands tall against pressure. Making good decisions. Mobile when necessary but looks to pass first. Completing lots of 3rd & longs. Might have to see this in person when he comes to town.

Would have been a brobdingnagian fish to land, esp since he was a two-sport guy (baseball), but I like Stanford the way we are right now too. Winston made his choice--hope he never has to regret it.Â

We went after him late in the process, when he was totally committed to FSU. Had we started earlier we might have prevailed. Kevin Hogan isn't exactly chopped liver, though, so I think we are in good shape.

Yeah he was simply amazing. I am not sure if he would have gotten the mod over Hogan.Â

That was the most impressive debut I've seen since Hogan's against Colorado, and Pitt ain't Colorado. The comparison shouldn't be Hogan v Winston as they are different classes. It should be Lloyd v Winston, and given what I saw in the Stanford Spring Game compared to last night's game, my initial thought is that I'd rather have Winston.
I'll go ahead and make the Hogan comparison anyway. With the caveat of a limited sample and different teammates, here are my initial impressions: Winston has a much stronger arm and a little bit more accurate. Hogan is more agile. The most important difference is temperament. Hogan is famously calm and cool. Winston's bad temper and fiery personality has already been documented, and he displayed it last night. A run of the mill miscue from the coaches led to a delay of game penalty and Winston went bonkers. Doesn't seem to affect his play, but we'll see how it goes in bigger and closer games. I don't think his combustible personality and criticism of teammates would go over well in a Stanford locker room. He probably wouldn't have played as true frosh and given what I've read about him, I don't think he would sit quietly and wait his turn. As amazing as he looks, I don't think the fit was there.
A couple asides. Our very own Rod Gilmore tweeted out that Winston wanted to go to Texas, but Mack Brown didn't recruit him. RG3, Manziel, and now Winston. That's quite the hat trick there. IIRC correctly Gunner Kiel was more highly rated than Winston. Boy did they get that one wrong.
EDIT: I forgot about Luck. What's the hockey term for scoring 4 times in a game?

iirc, Stanford offered before his SR year, and certainly early enough to Winston to go through Admissions process (accepted too?)

He was definitely accepted. He actually didn't sign his LOI til a couple of days later than everyone else so there was some talk that he might flip to Stanford. Alas, no such luck.
