WBB: Merc article with Toni interview - 81alum - 03-26-2013

I promised not to further speculate about Toni, and so I won't.  But I will point out an interesting Eliott Almond article that appeared today in the Merc.  You can find it here:
http://www.mercurynews.com/stanford-cardinal/ci_22869009/ncaa-womens-tournament-stanford-tries-fill-void-key

The focus begins with Stanford's dilemma of how to guard Michigan's 6'4" shooting guard Kate Thompson.  Tara obviously will miss Toni.
Quote:"No one else has the power, size and the athleticism that Toni has," coach Tara VanDerveer said.

Toni discusses the long term.
Quote:The 5-11 Kokenis has been able to pass during practice drills but not do much else. She declined to discuss details of her condition or when it started.  "It was just something we agreed upon as coaches, doctors," Kokenis said of not discussing it. "The main thing is to have my safety and personal health the priority."
...
But the player who doubles as a trumpeter in the Stanford marching band isn't sure about her future.  "We're just trying to take it day to day," Kokenis said. "Hopefully that means I can come back next year. That would be the best possible outcome. I don't know. There's no set time that I will be back this day or not."

Re: WBB: Merc article with Toni interview - 76lsjumb - 03-26-2013

Interesting comment by Toni, in light of the earlier thread regarding disclosure v. non-disclosure.  It could be read as putting the decision for non-disclosure on any or all of: Toni, the coaches, or the doctors.  [Please understand:  This comment is not about [and I'm not speculating on] the condition at all, but about the issue one level removed -- i.e., the decision not to disclose.]  At least a reporter finally asked the question -- and got a response -- in a public forum.

And we still don't have a clue...

That article also had a note at the end that Muir will be discussing a contract extension with Tara at the end of the season.  Judging from the outcome of Johnny D's recent discussions, I'd say that being Tara's agent [at least for those talks] has got to be the easiest sports job in the world.  Indeed, a small rock sitting on a table would presumably be able to get that contract extension on pretty good terms...

Re: WBB: Merc article with Toni interview - M T - 03-26-2013

One would have to think that Tara is thinking about how long she wants to, and can, do this job.  Obviously, she is great at it.  But I think it is also obvious that Stanford would do well with, say, Amy.  Tara may want to do this job as long as she can, just as Pat Summit did.  But Tara is approaching that point where she has to make the decision, is there anything else that I'd rather do in the years I have left.

If Stanford is all that she may want, then she will be welcomed here as long as she wants.  Obviously she loves it here, but she may want something else as well.  I simply don't know.

An interesting question would be her contract relative to the men's coach's contract.  Does she get paid more?  If not, why not?  If so, will that be a hindrance to some man's coach that might come here?

And, how does her contract affect the contracts of other WBB coaches?

Re: WBB: Merc article with Toni interview - needle - 03-26-2013

The New York Times published a story last year (which did not mention Stanford) looking at pay issues involving WBB vs. MBB:

Quote: Summit’s annual compensation of $2.2 million is actually more than that of the men’s coach at Tennessee, Cuonzo Martin, who just finished his first season and earns $1.6 million. And Auriemma earns two-thirds of the $2.6 million that Jim Calhoun receives for coaching the UConn men.

A more typical comparison is found at Kansas State, where Frank Martin was paid $1.4 million, more than twice the salary for Deb Patterson, who earns $595,016. (Martin left Kansas State last week to become the coach at South Carolina.) North Carolina’s Roy Williams receives three times as much as Sylvia Hatchell, who earns $514,718. Williams has won two national titles for the Tar Heels; Hatchell has won one.

This one's hard for even a new athletic director to mess up. Give her whatever she wants, and it had better be a whole lot more than Johnny Dawkins is making.

Oh, and MT, she answers your question in there.

Re: WBB: Merc article with Toni interview - 81alum - 03-29-2013

This came along at an opportune moment for Tara:

Quote:Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma has signed a new $10.86 million contract, a deal designed to keep him at the school through the 2017-18 season, UConn announced Wednesday.  The 59-year-old Hall of Famer, who has coached at UConn since 1985, will make $1.95 million in salary, speaking fees and media fees in the next year. That will gradually increase to $2.4 million in the final year of the five-year contract.
