Okay, how fun is the Spring Game really? - oman - 03-06-2013

Okay, here is the deal.  We are doing the "escape the Texas heat" way early this year and I just realized I am landing in SF the morning of the Spring Game.

Here is the set up.

1) My wife is like a Lab when she lands in SF.  She wants to get to the water, and not just any water.  It has to be West Marin water.  So in general, she tolerates getting some food in the Sunset, maybe some veggies at a market, and then getting over the Golden Gate as fast as she can.  We will come back to SF later in the week, but it's all about getting to Point Reyes.

2) If the game were at Kezar I could have swung it.  Pretty easily in fact.  But going down to Stanford and then not getting to Point Reyes until after sundown will require just a boatload of brownie points.

Having never been to one of these, is it a good show or just a glorified practice?  Because there is nothing remotely wrong with a glorified practice but I am going to have a person who really is not going to want to be there unless there are some bells and whistles in the form of food or other distractions.

I will worry when you report that your wife has a fondness for chasing sticks.

By your description of what your wife wants to do when she lands at SFO, I was confused and thought you were describing me.

I went to the Kezar game a year ago, and it was not very valuable to me. Perhaps a bit more from those of you that can pick apart a play when you watch it (from a lower angle) and derive significance.

I say it's a glorified practice.

About "unless there are some bells and whistles in the form of food or other distractions" ... last year they made a big deal about the various renowned food trucks that were available at kezar that day.  But no idea if they will be at the event this year and even so, not sure it would make it worth it to her.

Uh .... A happy wife is a happy life.

I'd save my brownie points for other activities!

It's fun if you're champing at the bit for football, but as estephan says, it is a glorified practice. In fact, last year's featured a cryptic  method for scoring the defense. It was not always clear which team was first team and which were second, third or fourth.

Why can't you go one way and your wife go the other for a few hours?  Then you both can do what you want to do, and meet up later.

If that isn't practical, why can't she do what you want to do for a few hours, then you do what she wants to do the rest of the trip, which will be a lot more than a few hours?  The water will still be there the next day.

Complicating matters is that I believe that the Pac-12 networks will be broadcasting the game live and (I'd imagine) rebroadcasting it several times as well.

1) Good advice.  Yes, I will save the brownie points.

2) When my wife and I aren't on vacation we usually go our separate ways.  But when we go on vacation we both do amazingly well at agreeing on what we want to do.  It's like we both have the same adventure quotient or something.  Nope, I am generally content to let her run the show when we are on holiday.

Oman,

There are two places in Sunset/Richmond that I make a pilgrimage to every time I'm in SF:  PPQ Dungeness Island for Vietnamese crabs and Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream for Asian-flavored gelato.

Thanks for the recs.  We are gong to be getting there really early and I'm liking the idea of hitting PPQ right when they open, the market that we usually go to which is just a few blocks away, and then the Green Apple to get the novel for the deck.

(If I can get one out of three of these, it will be a small victory.)

Hope you like it.  PPQ (and any other place I recommend to CARDboarders for that matter) carries my personal guarantee.  If you don't like it, I'll buy you dinner in Boston.

If you need coffee or ice cream while at green apple, Toy Boat is one block away at 401 Clement.  We used to split a lot of time between the two when we lived in the neighborhood.

I'm officially in awe.

I don't think he said you get to pick the place.
