Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - OutsiderFan - 02-24-2013

4.76

Who would have thunk it?  I thought Taylor would have run maybe 4.65, but at least a bit faster than Ertz.  Whenever Taylor was in the open field, he generally went further than Ertz before being hauled down, if he was.  But Taylor's strengths as a runner are his power, wide base, some good short area quickness, and a very good stiff arm, not his straight line speed.  That said, I think he ran fast enough in the open field with a football in his hands and pads on.  Taylor has enough other abilities like pass blocking and catching, that I for one believe he should make an NFL roster and make a contribution.

The big question now is will Chase Thomas run a faster 40 than Ertz and Taylor?

Stepfan just tweeted that he had a sprained ankle.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - needle - 02-24-2013

This is bad news for Stepfan. Very bad.

I did a quick search of all the RBs drafted in 2012, using nfl.com and espn.com as my sources. No tailbacks drafted who ran above 4.7.

In rounds one through five, almost all the guys were around 4.5.

Round six you probably had some "sliders." Gannaway, the Baylor kid, ran a 4.67. On a happier note, Alfred Morris, Redskins ROY candidate, ran a 4.67

Maybe it's all because of the ankle, but I'm just saying Taylor needs to get down to the 4.67 range at the very least or Draft Day has the very real potential to be very, very depressing.

Isn't that why we have that Stanford pro day?  To help correct something like a bad 40 due to the ankle?

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - DC - 02-24-2013

He should have declined to run.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - FarmBoy - 02-25-2013

Chase ran a 4.91 with 18 reps on the bench press. Second to last in time. ~20th  of 26 in reps. I guess it's all about technique for Chase.

ND's Manti Te'o failed to impress with a 4.82.

And Harbaugh.

That's awesome. I have a strange urge to go out and run a 40 yard dash and see if I could outrun Manti.

Don't know if you can, but the problem is that 12 DL and 2 OL prospects ran faster times this year.  That might still be OK for a 5th round LB pick, but probably not for a 1st round pick.

Quote:On Monday, Te’o blamed his poor performance during the 40-yard dash on the overall stress of the Scouting Combine.

“I was running near a 4.6, a 4.5,” Te’o told NFL Network after officially clocking a 4.82-second 40-yard dash. “Today was just a long, long day.”

Te’o called the Combine a “very exhausting process,” explaining that he got to bed late and got up early, with roughly four hours of sleep per night.

Things that aren't stressful, tiring, or have long days: the NFL.

Levine Toilolo did not impress either.

Quote: Levine Toilolo, TE, Stanford: Toilolo is extremely tall and he looked stiff and robotic in all drills when trying to change directions and adjusting to the ball in the air. He was unnatural trying to catch the ball away from his body and had numerous drops in multiple drills. Today’s display definitely makes us question why Toilolo entered the Draft early when he could have stayed another season at Stanford to try and improve.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - FarmBoy - 02-26-2013

I always found Toilolo an interesting specimen to watch on the field. Because of his length, he doesn't look fluid out there. Maybe it's an effect of his injury, but every time he was hit, it looked like a possible injury. He just doesn't "look the part" of a professional athlete. Doesn't mean he can't be effective, but he doesn't pass the eyeball test, IMO. He certainly showed flashes of brilliance, an ability to catch the fade/jump ball when thrown properly. He'd make a good red zone target, though maybe not an every down TE, although the Taylor highlight video had a lot of him blocking down field, so perhaps I underestimate there. My guess is he'll be a late round pick up just based on his size and potential, but I'm not sure he makes the roster of a team.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - OutsiderFan - 02-26-2013

Hmm, it seems Toilolo showed at the combine what could be seen by watching him play football games.  He really should have taken the opportunity to get a year of Stanford grad school under his belt for free, while trying to get better as a football player, instead of foregoing a year of eligibility to chase the NFL now.

Is there anyone who wasn't questioning that? His leaving never made any sense to me from any perspective. Maybe it's like Darron Thomas last year, where his leaving baffled everyone, and is now he's a backup in the CFL. He must have some reason, but we'll probably never find out what it is.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - Bruce Wang - 02-26-2013

The NCAA should allow players to go back to school if they do badly at the combine as long as they haven't signed an agent or received any money.

Re: Taylor and Ertz with same combine 40 time - FarmBoy - 02-26-2013

After reading Darren Thomas' explanation, his departure actually made sense. After 2 years as the starter, what more was he going to do/learn in a third year? His stats were not going to improve and Chip Kelly wasn't going to change the offense to allow Darren to show more NFL QB skills. He had his degree from Oregon. There really was no value to coming back, from a development perspective. Some speculate that he saw how good Mariota was and that he may be passed on the depth chart. Maybe, but the first rationale makes sense.

Maybe Toilolo felt that he wasn't going to develop any more either (which would be a bad sign to an NFL GM) or that with his history of injury, it was better to roll the dice now. It is surprising and his performance at the Combine makes it an even bigger headscratcher.

As for going back to school after the Combine, doesn't the NFL provide a service whereby you can be evaluated for draftability? I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I imagine it takes into account more than just your "measurables" so that should be more informed that Combine performance, I would think. Also, I think most players need to sign with an agent to get the financial support and resources to do the training for the Combine, etc, so I would imagine that would preclude them from returning. Plus, they've take off school to do so, which would put academic progress at risk. BUt I guess if you did the training on your own dime and stayed academically eligible, it would make sense to have the option to return.
