I understand another tanker of Jameson's has been dispatched to New Orleans for the forthcoming tale of woe.  I suspect NIPS faithful will chalk this one up as national championship #12.

Will the final AP rankings show Stanford above Notre Dame?

I guess that would be a stretch.

Note that it's not nice when a "find some way to get a win" team faces a "almost always forcefully win" team.

No shock to me since I believed Bama would roll to a 21+ point win.

I thought ND would look a little better on D, but not shocked at all by the results so far.

I think if ND lost by 5 or 6 points they could really rally strong going into 2013 believing they are close.  I think now they will look back and realize how lucky they were to get into a game.  They are simply not worthy.  The Ducks should have been in this game even after their OT loss to Stanford.

Given all the hate for Bill Plaschke here, I'm surprised no one has posted his latest embarrassing column:

I actually don't have anything against Brian Kelly or Manti Teo or Everett Golson, so I found this column a great reminder on why I hate ND!

AS the season developed after we lost /got screwed in South Bend, there was talk about how Stanford would match up against Alabama, seeing how we actually "should" have won that N.D. game.  I wonder whether any of those speculators think Stanford would have beaten Alabama.    We are good,  very good at times.  Alabama is just in a league of their own...(along w/ Texas A&M ;) ) Eddie Lacy is something else.

Lacy was impressive. But his offensive line was what made his big game possible- the ND running backs made nice first cuts as well, but then they cut into an onslaught of rushers. The Bama backs had to make one cut, and then daylight.

I think we would've kept this game closer than ND did, but a win would've required a lot of luck.

Also, the contrast between our players on the podium and everybody else's is immense.

(PS Musberger shouts out Stanford, along with Oregon and Ohio State, at the end of the broadcast tonight....lot of free publicity at the end of this season).

You're not going to beat 'bama playing the same game they do. This year, we were. That means very little chance against them -- I suspect we would've gotten housed by the Tide, too. Playing their game was the smartest allocation of resources this year; I think it'll be smart to evolve beyond that style next year.

Thought that I saw a priest administering last rites to ND on the sidelines in the middle of the 2nd quarter.  Their "blocks of granite" front 7 looked like crumbly sandstone.

Alabama was certainly in a league of their own today.  they didn't look this good against LSU, tA&Mu or UGA.  LSU looked mediocre against Clemson in the bowl game, and UGA indifferent against a Nebraska that gave up 70 to Wisconsin.  that said, I was pleased to see Alabama pummel NIPS

I'm not sure about that WIM. LSU has had about as much success against Bama as anybody, and they're nearly mirror images. I think Stanford's D could shut down the Bama offense as well as anybody else in the country. I think Oregon or A&M match up better on offense than we do, but their offensive styles also dictate defensive styles that are probably overall less successful against a team like Bama.

The truth of it is that Bama's offensive and defensive lines are simply the most dominant units in college football, and they have enough playmakers to win individual battles without resorting to gimmicks. I'm not sure style makes a difference against such superior talent.

Well, even LSU doesn't try to match up with them straight up. They routinely try crazy stuff on special teams; this year, they had Mettenberger throw the ball all over the lot.

N.otre D.ame, when it counted, just tried to play talent-ball. That's just not going to work, especially when your QB is as mediocre as Golson.

Not sure if you were implying the "7 Blocks of Granite" was a Notre Dame legend, but...it was actually Fordham University's line, one of whose members was Vince Lombardi.

I'm glad Bama won. No scratch that -- I'm glad ND lost.

BUT, I don't think the mismatch was as great as people are making it out to be. ND was able to score and contain Bama in the second half. Sure, Bama probably relaxed a bit in the second half with the big lead but they did seem to want the shutout and couldn't get it done. They were still throwing the ball deep late in the game and didn't outscore ND in the second half. The lopsided score is more a matter of ND self destructing in the first half, aided by a few terrible officiating calls going against them (not that I have a problem with that, of course). It looked like it took ND the entire first half to get used to the occasion while it was routine business on the other side (as it should be for a team whose seniors are doing this for the third time).

Would we have done better? I do think our coaches and team would have come out ready to play from the get go. That's been a hallmark of Shaw teams. Would it have been enough to win? Perhaps not, but I'm sure the game would have been closer that this one was.

Bama should also thank the referees for gifting ND two games and thus delivering such a soft, undefeated opponent in a NCG.
