Long ago in a galaxy far away - The Band performs in 1970 -

Found this video of the Band performing at halftime of the November 7, 1970 game vs. Washington. Stanford would defeat the Huskies to clinch a Rose Bowl berth.
But the real treat is listening to the Band perform WITH narration by Chris Schenkel, the ABC play-by-play guy. Oh those glorious days before halftime studio shows and cuts to commercial every two minutes. ABC broadcast the entire 10 minute show. The last 4 minutes of the video include sideline and crowd shots at various times during the game and Bud Wilkinson's Stanford campus tour. This is a real gem.

quaint.
It's interesting that those "little princesses" are now grandmothers.

Wow, I guess I really am an old fart. I recognize all the songs that the band played in that clip - Jackson 5, Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond! Thanks for sharing.

You don't need to be an old fart to recognize several of those songs -- you can hear the band play them pretty much every weekend!Â
Heck, my high school son recognizes them. In fact, in a few years, I'm pretty sure my 1-year-old grandson will recognize them! 8)
It's the marching into the first formation that you REALLY have to be an old fart to recognize...

You're right, the band still plays some of those songs! I loved the marching on to the filed, and the card stunts in the stands! I think we still did card stunts my freshman year.

"A tribute to women's liberation" by an all-male band with the only females on the field known as "dollies" and wearing short skirts. Irony died a very long time ago.

That is beyond ultimate.
So were some of those sideline clips just edited from the main broadcast or were some of those shots added later, and the broadcast was actually showing the field? Or are they just editing out the football action shots?
Editorial. I like the band when it is a little more deliberate about its humor. And a tad tighter on the music.
Ha on "The Love You Save". When I was hanging out with my future wife back in Austin, we came out of a bookstore and jumped into my awesome Tercel. The music came on when I turned the ignition, and "The Love You Save" was just starting up. My future wife, with no hesitation, reached over and switched the station, cutting off what had always been one of my favorite songs.
The relationship had just gotten going, and I should have started the process of ending it right there.
But she was so beautiful I decided my new favorite song was something from a later Jackson's album. Maybe "Blame it On the Boogie".

Had forgotten how good Honky Tonk Woman was.
Not having been in CA for any games for years (except at Kezar) I'd love to know which of the old song are still being played. Favorites were Stevie wonder "I Wish," white punks on dope, suffragette city. I also request that they remove "one at a time."
Is there still an after game concert on the "sunny side?"

The band still plays after games BUT since the students have moved to the South corner shady side (Harbaugh's request) the post game is there now. Its usually not that long - how long did they play in the 70s?

When the 80 year old Wisconsin band director wants to get frisky, he'll put in a Stones song.Â
(His directorship at Wisconsin pre-dates that video by two years.)

Those were some of my fondest memories. Even when the team lost, we would all be bummed for a few minutes as the band played the school song. THEN, a second later, the band would start jamming, we'd start dancing, and everyone would be happy again. And as garvin says - they'd play for a long time. It was the best part of the going to the game.

Here's some useless trivia for you. My great-uncle Charles August Mann was a past Wisconsin band director. You can see him in the picture on this page:
http://www.badgerband.com/history/earlyYears.php
Here's an article about him taking the Wisconsin band on a trip to San Francisco in 1915:
http://www.uwalumni.com/home/chaptersandaffiliates/microsites/150/band_1915.aspx. (The 1869 in the article is an error. Mann was born in 1886, received his B.S. from Wisconsin in 1909, and was a grad student there while he directed the band. He received his PhD from Wisconsin in 1915 and eventually went on to head the Chemical Engineering department at the University of Minnesota.)

I thoroughly enjoyed the video. And I agree with your assessment of the Band. I've always enjoyed the concept of the band, with its political commentary, risque double-entendre, choice of rock music, and the scatter band concept. I've defended it against traditionalists many times. And yet, sometimes it does these things very well and sometimes it does them poorly.Â

Estephan, after the Pac 12 championship game, my friend and I went down on the field. She said that we were not leaving until the Band played White Punks On Dope. As soon as I heard the familiar intro, I started dancing like a freshman. It was the cherry on top of a great day.

Now that I'm with my teenage sons on the field after games, I feel odd chanting "white punks on dope".
I do it anyway.

I guess it's easier to step away from the kids for just a moment when it's time to shout "wham, bam, thank you ma'am."
