To Pete Alamar. Special teams won the game, essentially. Williamson, obviously. Rhyne wasn't fantastic but was good for a backup in his first major game (and what a major game that was.) No brobdingnagian gaffes. Great return coverage. Some nice returns for our guys. Almost everything you want your special teams to do -- except maybe some awesome fake or TD return -- the special teams did. And we won.

There was a lot of skepticism about the hire in the first place, but judged on first-year returns I feel pretty good about it.

I will throw in the good snaps & holds for extra points & field goals.

[size=14pt] Who's our long-snapper? Reed Miller? Whoever he is, he was great.  I think Williamson, Rhyne and the LS center get major kudos. The snapper and Williamson were used to working with Zychlinski, had to bring in somebody new and despite the precision required, went two for two and got all the PAT's.  We saw on UCLA's last FG how a snap that's just a little off can be fatal.

Oh, and did I mention (for the ninth time) my son is a long-snapper?

Give Rhyne MUCH more credit - Redrum - 12-01-2012

Who was the holder on Williamson's heartbreaking misses?  Zychlinski

Who was the holder for Williamson vs UCLA  and vs. UCLA    Rhyne.  Notice that they didn't do the now-famous "Williamson Hook" to the left?  It's the holder, man.

LACES OUT ZYCHLINSKI

Re: Credit not given yet - DC - 12-01-2012

Rhyne seemed to put more of his hand on the top of the ball, while Z seemed to use less of his hand and rely more on his fingers. Whether it is this, or something else, we should be happy with the results.

Not confident of the sample size here.

Fair enough, but if Z is healthy for the Rose Bowl who is your holder?

Re: Credit not given yet - ATLCard - 12-02-2012

Well Rhyne was the holder for the missed 45 yd field goal at UCLA game 1, so he is 2/3 as a holder which is not a significant difference from the overal season FG stats (15/25).  Still, I would probably go with Rhyne for the Rose Bowl because you have a month of practices and if there is no significant difference why not find out if you have your holder for next year?  I don't think it would be an insult to Zychlinski -- his main role is as the starting punter and it's his last year.

But speaking of next year, why not have someone like Dallas Lloyd hold next year?  I always liked the flexibility that comes from a holder with run/pass optionality.  Even if you are not inclined towards fakes like Shaw, it helps when there is a bad snap.

Very strongly agree.  always good to have more options:  both for fakes and emergences
