Hold onto your hats, traditionalists. The boys will be wearing black on Friday night, according to Kyle Bonagura.

Is this some sort of stealth strategy for a rainy night?
Methinks an loss on Friday night - Redrum - 11-28-2012
might put an end to the whole black uniform thing. If I were a player, in the gloom of night, I'd prefer uniforms that were as visible as possible. But the players obviously feel otherwise. Hope they still wear the white helmets. Just win baby.

That sucks. I was really looking forward to seeing the Cardinal and White on the field Friday. As I watched the end of the game I actually thought to myself how nice it will be to see them in their home Cardinal both on Friday and in the Rose Bowl.

How about everybody wears black except for our receivers?

I was seriously up for the cardinal jerseys. I think a team's gimmicky uniforms should not be used in the postseason. New rule I made up. Also... How much good did ucla's gimmicky uniforms do them last week?

Dang! National audience, conference championship on the line, great photo ops under monday Night Football style light ..... Shouldn't Stanford be honing OUR brand - and not Oregon's?
Oh well, it still will be great fun and maybe my rose colored outlook on this match-up will turn those blank unis red.

The black uniforms are fun, but they are gimmicky. For this game we need our traditional colors and I will be disappointed if we don't see them.

That's going to be annoying. We should be showcasing our real colors on the field. But I guess the only thing that really matters is the W.

Undefeated in black, with two blowouts--if we get a blowout victory every time we wear black, I say we petition the NCAA to wear them home AND away.

Since we want a black and blue mentality, I vote for black and blue with squiggly metallic branches shooting out from the face mask and on the shoulder pads.Â
Let the kids have fun. Playin' the fool should not be just for the band.

This week's Stanford press release says Stanford will wear the black uniforms and black helmets. That's what they wore against Duke earlier this season. Apparently, the players wanted the black uniforms.

Seriously, this isn't the end of the world, but I really do believe black uniforms at night are a bad idea if it costs Hogan a half second to properly find and gauge his receivers. If he's sacked in that half-second....  Oh, well.
I'll note that our victories in black were a Luck-led team over a completely overmatched Wake Forest and a daylight game against a mostly overmatched Duke team. If the boys were feelin' the boost black unis supposedly gave them vs. Duke, they weren't really making it very evident.
Just win baby.

The team also wore black for a night game last year vs. . . . . UCLA. Final score - 45-19.
The unis are going to be soaked. After a few skids through the puddles, it will be hard to tell what color the jerseys were originally anyway.

From David Lombardi's twitter:

Ben Gardner told me Shaw promised team black uniforms for @pac12 title if they beat UCLA last week. Well, they got them.

I'm pretty sure the Duke game was a night game, not a daylight game. So if I'm remembering correctly, the black uniforms have only been used for night games (and indeed, I think I remember reading that they were planning to use them only for night games). In any case, I doubt the uniforms affect visibility much, and even if they do, that cuts both ways (when Boise State wore blue uniforms on a blue field, some people complained that might make their players less visible and thus give them an advantage -- the exact opposite of the argument people are making here).
By the way, there are also some academic studies that suggest that wearing black makes athletes more aggressive and makes them play harder, but also makes them more likely to be penalized. I wouldn't put a lot of weight on the results from those studies (they don't have a controlled experiment or anything like it), but they're still interesting to think about.

One thing I like about Mick Jagger is he's older than I am. Bring on the black unis.

And this year the score against Duke was 50-13. I won't be picky. Either of those scores is fine with me.

This was my initial reaction as well Redrum, but as I've been thinking more about it, if our bread and butter is the run game and defense, the harder we are to see, the better an advantage we have. Not being able to find Stepfan coming out of the backfield, and Hundley not seeing Ed Reynolds or Jordan Richards lurking in the shadows seem more likely with us in the all blacks.
I've never been a fan of the black uniforms, but if pressed, I must say that I prefer this years edition with the black helmets and no border around the white numbers.
