2013 schedule - 97fan - 11-27-2012

from ESPN's Pac-12 blog:

STANFORD

Home: ASU, C.al, ORE, UCLA, WASH.

Away: OSU, SC, UTAH, WSU

Miss: Arizona, Colorado

I love how this schedule shapes up. Oregon, UCLA, ND, and Washington are all home games. Those might be the four toughest games on the schedule.

Re: 2013 schedule - Robbie - 11-27-2012

Yes, but Colorado is the easiest game not on the schedule.

Re: 2013 schedule - fullmetal - 11-27-2012

Oregon State and U$C will always play tough...I'd trade kal and UCLA for those two at home.  Is ASU tough?  I confess I haven't seen them play this year...

Re: 2013 schedule - terry - 11-27-2012

Non-conference games are:

Sept. 14 - at Army
Nov. 30 - NotreDame
TBA - San Jose State

I'm in for the Army road trip. Anyone else?

Re: 2013 schedule - Spiny_Norman - 11-27-2012

I have been to 2 Army home games and can tell all Stanford fans that the game day experience at West Point and Michie Stadium is not to be missed.  I am definitely planning on returning on Sept 14.

Re: 2013 schedule - Renaissance Man - 11-27-2012

Oregon and Washington, likely our toughest PAC-12 North rivals, both miss USC.

Re: 2013 schedule - Extra Point - 11-27-2012

"Oregon and Washington, likely our toughest PAC-12 North rivals, both miss the team Under Stanford Control."

Are you assuming that USC will have a good team for the next two years. USC is about to lose a bunch of key players. Recruiting restrictions are about to hit them hard. They will continue to have depth issues for the foreseeable future. Their coaching staff is suspect. USC is losing fan support. It appears to me that OU and UW would be better off playing USC than UCLA.

What was good about it?  I live on the east coast and could go....

I hope Army isn't still chop blocking.

Re: 2013 schedule - Kathy - 11-28-2012

I thought that was Navy with the chop blocks.

I am assuming that USC will be better than Colorado, who WE will be missing--the last time I checked they had one of the best recruiting classes in the nation coming in, again, next year.  Talent does make a difference in this sport...

DC, regardless of one's political leanings, it is stirring to see the Army cadets in their dress uniforms marching on the parade grounds on Saturday morning, then wandering over to the stadium area that is beautifully set near the Hudson River.  You will feel a sense of history on the campus that has educated American military leaders for over 200 years.

Here is a good article about the fan experience - http://www.stadiumjourney.com/stadiums/blaik-field-at-michie-stadium-s450/

As the article notes, Sports Illustrated posted their top 20 Sports Venues of the 20th Century (6/7/1999) and the top three on their list were (original) Yankee Stadium, Augusta National and Michie Stadium.

Re: 2013 schedule - dabigv13 - 11-28-2012

Huh, West Point is not too far of a drive from NYC. I'll have to rent a car and get up there for that.

Re: 2013 schedule - Oasis - 11-28-2012

Twice I tried to go to a game at West Point.  The first time was September 15, 2001.  I was at a convention in NYC, which started -- and ended -- on the morning of 9-11.  I ended up walking all over Manhattan that day trying to give blood; no one needed any. It was a spectacular day and all afternoon you could see the fighters circling over the city.

In planning the trip I decided it would be fun after the convention to go up and see a football game at West Point. I was never as relieved in my life when they honored my reservation (many weren't honored), put me in a rental car and I drove across the river.  In the days after 9-11 no one knew what was going to happen next. There was a lot of angst about an attempt to blow up the tunnels into the city.

The drive up the Hudson to West Point was beautiful.  They canceled the game but it was still alumni weekend, the alums showed up and the cadets put on a full-dress parade.  It was very moving, especially under the circumstances.  In their polite, yes-sir, no-sir way the cadets were seething with rage.  During the parade you could see snipers dressed in black moving along the roofs of the buildings.  A gnat with bad intent probably would've been shot out of the sky. Before the parade got started they handed out little American flags to the spectators in the stands.

While I was at West Point the airline canceled my flight and I ended up driving back to California. Quite a trip.

The next year I had better luck and saw a game at Michie (pronounced "Mikey") Stadium.  It was delightful. The stadium area environs are beautiful.  The fans I remember were Army brass, the cadets -- who make you proud just to see them and exchange a few pleasantries -- and a bunch of locals, including some charming little old ladies from neighboring Highland Falls, NY.

Army played Louisville, then about a number 20 team.  Louisville built up a big lead but when Army scored late in the 4th to narrow the deficit to about three TDs you would've thought they'd just won the Super Bowl.  The cadets erupted, the band struck up "On Brave Old Army Team" and from generals to grandmas everybody was on their feet.

After the game the alumni retired to the Thayer Hotel for some serious drinking and discussion about how much they love West Point.  The Michie Stadium experience has to be one of the best.

Thanks, I'll give it serious consideration.  If you stayed overnight, where did you stay? Or maybe I'll hit some casinos up there while I'm at it.

Re: 2013 schedule - terry - 11-28-2012

Going to a game at Army sounds great! I'm really looking forward to this trip. We're planning to spend several days in New York City, then the football game, then a week or 10 days driving across New York state -- the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, the Finger Lakes, Niagara Falls. Maybe a side trip to Lake Champlain. Should be fun.

Re: 2013 schedule - Kathy - 11-28-2012

You won't be sorry if you include Lake Champlain on your itinerary, Terry. And if you do, make sure you spend a day at Fort Ticonderoga! (one of my favorite historical parks/military museums)

Absolutely. I used to live in Plattsburgh.

I was working in Westchester at the time and living at the Residence Inn in White Plains.  I would certainly stay there again, but I hope to be able to stay with friends in September.
