Some highlights of the All Pac-12 team:
On offense, 9 Stanford players got recognition -- 4 offensive linemen (all but Wilkes), 2 tight ends, Taylor, Hewitt, and Hogan (yes, Hogan got honorable mention).
On defense, 11 Stanford players got recognition -- all of the starters except Tarpley, plus Amanam. That means 5 Stanford DBs got recognition. Wow.
On special teams, 4 Stanford players got recognition -- Debniak, Zychlinski, Terrell (as a punt returner), and Montgomery (as a kickoff returner).
First team: 5 players
Second team: 5 players
Honorable mention: 14 players
That means 24 Stanford players got all-conference recognition. Plus Coach Shaw. Pretty amazing.

I definitely don't agree with some of those selections. TJ McDonald on the 2nd team over Jordan Richards? McDonald's scouting report a few weeks ago was updated to "his season has been so bad he could go undrafted". Really shows how bad USC coaching is if a star players gets worse every year. Richards had a much better season as a sophomore.
I'm surprised Danser made 2nd team over Fleming and I would probably have Tarpley and Skov on the 2nd team over the guys that made it.
Re: All Pac-12 team -

Of the 24 Stanford players who got all-conference recognition, 17 have eligibility remaining. The only players with no further eligibility are Taylor, Schwartzstein, Thomas, Stephens, Terrell, Debniak, and Zychlinski.

I'm likewise surprised Tarpley and Skov didn't make it. I'm also shocked I didn't know that Toilolo was listed as a true senior (no action freshman year). Somehow I'd thought of him as a soph/jr in the pipeline. Turns out he's the same year as Ertz (who also didn't play his freshman year).
Re: All Pac-12 team -
97fan - 11-26-2012
I don't want to sound churlish -- I'm guessing that 24 all-conference players is a record for Stanford -- but it's a shame that A.J. Tarpley didn't get recognized. He was arguably one of the top five players on Stanford's defense, and clearly deserved at least Honorable Mention status. On the other hand, it's hard to see what T.y Montgomery did to merit recognition.
It's obvious that some voters aren't paying close enough attention and just rely on preseason hype. Too bad.

For some reason media outlets et. al. have a lot of trouble with our eligibility system. Toilolo is not only eligible for next year, I think he'd also have a decent shot at a 6th year if he wanted it (NOTE: supremely unlikely.). There are several others on the list.
Said it on another thread, but it's pretty incredible to get honorable mention kudos for, what, four games in a body of work? As a redshirt freshman?
97fan, Ty was listed as a return specialist. When healthy, he was, in fact, very good: his 25.80 yards/return would rank in the top 30 nationally if he qualified.
Re: All Pac-12 team -
terry - 11-26-2012
The first and second team QBs were Marcus Mariota and Matt Scott. That means U.S.C.'s MattBarkley went from Voldemort front-runner to all-conference honorable mention. Wow. Not exactly what he was envisioning, I'm sure.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I read too quickly.

I'd take Taylor and Franklin over Barner and Carey in a heartbeat--and I suspect so would pretty much every NFL team.
Nice honor for Shaw, and congrats to all who were recognized.

The Tarpley omission is glaring.

Damn, I wanted to make post enquiring who you thought would make the All Pac-12 Team (first and second teams) from Stanford. Oh well.
A few thoughts:
A former California player who frequents some California boards and does great statistical analysis has said that in order to win a conference championship, a team needs 10 All-Conference selections. That was with 10 teams. Now with 12 teams, it's probably a bit lower, but 10 certainly proved to be enough in Stanford's case.
Jordan Richards and A.J. Tarpley were certainly deserving, but this is a political vote, and Stanford plays a 3-4 defense. The reality is all Stanford's starting LBs are All-Conference caliber.
Kind of surprised Danser made second team over Fleming.
California had just one All-Conference selection on offense and defense. Only selection was their kicker, who frankly won it by default due to a lousy group of Pac-12 kickers.

I was surprised about the kicker. Oregon State's kicker tied for 8th in the country in FG percentage (and was 5/6 from 40 yards or more), substantially better than Kal's kicker. But he only got honorable mention (Kal and WSU were 1st and 2nd team, respectively). Perhaps voters felt they needed to pick
someone from Kal and WSU...
Re: All Pac-12 team -

I made a mistake and corrected it, but California did have one selection, in first team OL Brian Schwenke, who played Center this year after moving from Guard his previous three years.

Good for David Shaw. This is great for our recruiting. On the down side, Stepfan is the man. Barner is good, but not in Stepfan's league.
but wait. There's more! -

Quote:STANFORD, Calif. - The American Football Coaches Association today announced that Stanford will receive the AFCA's 2012 Academic Achievement Award, which is presented by the Touchdown Club of Memphis. Stanford recorded a 100 percent graduation rate for members of its freshman football scholar-athlete class of 2005, as measured by the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR). Northwestern also achieved a 100 percent GSR and will share the award with Stanford.

Yep. We have a chance to be special next year. Of those with eligibility remaining, I think Ertz will be gone and I see him being drafted in the 2nd round. I also wasn't aware that Skov had another year of eligibility remaining.
The glaring weakness for next year will be our receiving targets. Hopefully, some of our recent recruits can develop in the offseason and/or we get immediate contributions from the incoming class, which may include Francis Owusu, Allen and Cunningham.

Hank 91 - 11-26-2012
I think Skov would have to apply for a medical redshirt (last season) to get an extra year. At one point I was hopeful that might happen, but I think he's probably played himself back into the top two or three rounds. I bet he leaves.
Re: All Pac-12 team -
teejers1 - 11-26-2012
Skov is nowhere near 100% . . . and he still is pretty darn good!
Unless Skov makes a remarkable ascent to full recovery by April - the time of the NFL meat market/draft evaluations - I think there is a great chance Shayne returns to Stanford for what will be a blockbuster senior season (assuming good health).
Re: All Pac-12 team -

Can someone who has been paying close attention to the offensive line talk about Kevin Danser? At one point this season true frosh Josh Garnett got to start, then it was back to Danser. Has he improved so much? And what kind of year is Cameron Flemming having?Â
