Securing David Shaw - Cardinal96 - 11-19-2012

During the Oregon game, one of the commentators mentioned that David Shaw was a darkhorse for possible NFL coaching positions.  A CBS Sportsline article I just read noted that Stanford's biggest challenge for success in the next few years may be hanging onto Shaw as his stock soars.

I don't know what we are currently paying David Shaw.  I haven't seen it disclosed anywhere.  Whatever we are paying him, I hope it is competitive with other progams in the Pac 12 and would love to see the AD sign an extension with Shaw.  If that means we have to pay him more, so be it.  He is worth keeping.  He has done a great job leading this program after the departures of Harbaugh and Luck.  In addition to on-field success, I love how he carries himself in interviews and during games.  And, unlike Harbaugh, I think he has significant loyalty to the university so I like our chances of being able to keep him.

While I have been very vocal here about wanting to see Nunes replaced at QB earlier in the season, I have never doubted that Shaw isn't the right coach for us.  It would really hurt to lose him to the NFL and I hope we can convince him to stay.

Re: Securing David Shaw - cardcoug - 11-19-2012

I really hope that is all just idle speculation. I remember when he was hired, one of the main selling points was that he seemed like a Stanford Man who would stick around.

Re: Securing David Shaw - CowboyIndian - 11-19-2012

I definitely want to see Shaw stay but I also want to have coordinators and assistants have to think long and hard about leaving. We've got a good thing going here and shouldn't be taking it for granted (or, as I have seen often on the intrawebs..."granite").

Re: Securing David Shaw - Kathy - 11-19-2012

That commentator during the Oregon game was Brent Musburger, one of the reasons I absolutely hate to watch football on ESPN. When he isn't blathering about the Big Ten (doesn't matter which conferences are playing on the field), he's spouting just about anything to avoid giving credit to Stanford's program. He had Harbaugh leaving for the NFL as soon as we beat USC in 2007. He had Andrew Luck leaving for the NFL draft before he graduated. And he drones on about it ad nauseum. Kirk Herbstreit was constantly steering him back to the game at hand. Thank goodness Ertz's TD was ruled legit when it was, even if we did have three more chances to score in the last two minutes. I don't think I could have stomached one more "and the Ducks are X minutes away from another win."

Definitely.  What really worries me is losing Derek Mason.  He coached a perfect defensive gameplan for Oregon and you can bet that wasn't lost on anyone.  I have never been more proud of watching us play as I was seeing us against Oregon.  I love defensive football and we put on a clinic.  Just amazing, inspired football.

Re: Securing David Shaw - fullmetal - 11-19-2012

Agreed.  How often does a program land defensive coordinators like Vic Fangio and Derek Mason back-to-back?

Re: Securing David Shaw - needle - 11-19-2012

Shaw is young enough that he will stay at Stanford at least a couple of more years, even if he does want a big NFL payday.

I keep looking to see if Derek Mason is mentioned in coaching carousel chatter, but so far haven't seen much buzz. I'm sure the media is just behind on this one, as he's got to be on somebody's radar--might even be an NFL team looking for a D-coordinator.

Re: Securing David Shaw - FarmBoy - 11-19-2012

I've always been of the mind that the verdict is out on Shaw's skill as a HC until his third season, unless he does something phenomenal in the first two. Winning the title last year would have met that criteria. Going to the RB this year would too. But barring that, I think we need to get a sample of 30+ games, and playing mostly players he recruited/developed, before we can truly tell his quality.

Re: Securing David Shaw - doubledub - 11-19-2012

There is a conspiracy among the sportswriters!

I was wondering, does Dave Lombardi have access to the press room after games to ask the coach questions? In his online stuff, he seems not to mince words.  Even in his post-Oregon interview he questioned the wisdom of the 43 yard field goal versus going for it.  I think it was a dumb decision by Shaw, unless Shaw figured that Williamson would miss one like he always does and better to get it out of the way sooner rather than later.

I agree with the other poster who is more concerned about Derek Mason.  The defense (other than AZ) is why we are here this year.  4 TOs against OSU and win, 3 against UO and a win.

Re: Securing David Shaw - washingtonismoney - 11-19-2012

Almost as important as Mason for the defense is Randy Hart, who's done great work with the defensive line. Can't wait to see what he does with Shittu/Watkins/Nwafor. Superb trio of hires in 2010 (and great decision by Shaw to elevate Mason.)

To quote John Malkovich, pay the dudes their money.

This is the one thing I don't like about Lombardi's reporting.  He seems to think that it makes him look smart and hard-nosed to be criticizing Shaw's decisions.  But it just makes him look immature and petty.  And it's too bad, because otherwise he's doing a great job.

I had the same quesiton.  Indeed, I'm pretty sure the loud boom I heard a little while ago was JohnnyO's head exploding after he saw this thread...

I feel the exact same way.  I stopped reading his things because it is just him basically criticizing Shaw no matter what, even if the article is in general positive.  It make him sound less like a reporter and more like a fan on a message board, not very professional.

Re: Securing David Shaw - Oasis - 11-19-2012

The days when college coaches stayed for 20 years are over.  Even if they flop in the pros (Spurrier, Saban, Pete Carroll1) the money is just too staggering not to go for it.  I don't think Shaw is headed for the Bentley dealer any time soon.

No one said anything about conspiracy, but I do believe that local sports writers have shied away from asking tough questions. Most members here spoke out when red army
Was personally denigrating Shaw. I do wo der about the mysterious disappearance of Shaw's most recent detractor, though.

Has anyone seen whether or not folks in Oregon are second-guessing Chip Kelly for not kicking the field goal early after the Mariota long run?

It's almost guaranteed that his thought process was along the following lines: "Hey, we'll get the TD and, if we don't, who really cares, because we'll just score next time."  I think it's almost as likely that Shaw would have kicked the field goal.

I wouldn't say Kelly's decision was indefensible...but, as it turns out, there's a good argument to be made that it probably cost them the game.

The opposite, actually.  On Addictedtoquack, they were upset they tried the 43 yard field goal.

Re: Securing David Shaw - jacketree - 11-19-2012

Don't worry, if Stanford loses to UCLA over the next two weeks, people will be back to dumping on Shaw.

Musburger and Herbstreit were gushing over Stanford's performance throughout the broadcast; I don't know how anyone could think either one of them was avoiding giving any credit to Stanford.  I remember some references to fans of ND and a couple of SEC teams being really interested in the outcome (and that 'Bama video is wild), but I can't remember any Big 10 references at all.

What, people really can't see a team like the Raiders taking a run at Shaw next year?  (Apparently Davis is on record that their GM and Coach are safe next year.) I don't think it is completely idle speculation.

Good programs have coordinators who take HC jobs elsewhere. I don't think it is really practical to expect Bud Fosterish or Nick Alioto-type loyalty on that front.

Great win though.  I received a hushed 1 a.m. EST call from JT Jr. Apparently he lost his internet feed right after Williamson missed his first FG attempt. Lights out.  'I can't sleep - what happened?'  I think he woke some roommates up. Then he was hacked off by the realization that but for UW and ND; Stanford would be #1 in the BCS.  I told him to be glad that now with two wins against UCLA, they are in Pasadena. Then I heard him wondering if the Navy would reimburse him for a flight from LA to Annapolis. (His trip out and back will be paid for by the taxpayers in an attempt to have midshipmen at the Hunger Bowl.)

I received a text from Jacketrette, who was in Corvallis to watch her Be.ars get annihilated in the cold rain. She said the crowd went nuts when they announced the score.

Is that all? If he continues to have the success he's been having, and Stanford pays him commensurately, I'd expect more than a few more years from an alum who's done the NFL circuit (albeit not as a head coach) and also said several times that he hopes/plans to be a lifer on the Farm. I know that most every coach says the equivalent, but Shaw went out of his way to say it multiple times and is an alum who fought his way back to the Farm. I'd be surprised if he bolted for the NFL.
