Schadenfreude Nouveau? -

A little schadenfreude nouveau anyone? Â It\'s a recently bottled light and bubbly LA vintage that can be drunk safely without risk of a hangover tomorrow. Â
Quote:When Jim Harbaugh took over the Cardinal four years ago he promised toughness and attitude and has delivered on both, his team a rough, smart, well-balanced machine that is obviously headed in the right direction.
Stanford took a forceful step forward last year, pummeling USC at the Coliseum and going nose-to-nose with the rest of the top teams in the Pac-10, and the Cardinal have taken that momentum right into this season.
There is no reason why UCLA should not be on a similar time table, but it\'s growing increasingly obvious the Bruins are not close to where Stanford was last year, and therefore far behind the rest of the conference this year.

Boy, that will make for some awkward practice field interviews in the future.
"Hey, coach! Got a minute?"
"&^%$ you!\'
I\'m trying to find the analogy. Is Neuheisel:
a) UCLA\'s Tom Holmoe? One could hope, but at least Neueheisel came into the job with a decent body of work on the field despite all his weaselyness.
b) UCLA\'s Wlat Harris? One could also hope. Harris had accomplishment in his background despite his suicidal acceleration into the brick wall. But so far Neuheisel has kept UCLA trajectory fairly flat, which Wlat couldn\'t do.
c) UCLA\'s Paul Hackett? God\'s gift to Stanford football during the Willingham years, Hackett managed a regime of mediocrity that never really sucked
that badly, but sucked enough that some weaker programs got a chance to poke their noses into the upper tier.
and, of course, the worst choice:
d) UCLA\'s Gods-of-Woofing Redemption coach? Exhibit A that if a school sticks with a basically good coach, eventually he will lead them out of the wilderness.

Aren\'t they sweet at that age?

When Wake Forest develops enough football cred to actually build a Pac-10 caliber rivalry, then maybe their fans will understand what it\'s like to, you know, hold a rivalry--especially when one element of the rivalry involves "most NCAA championship titles." Â Wait, I guess WF isn\'t going to know that feeling for a while...

Does WtF have a rivalry of
any kind?

Was that a doctored video, or was Skippy drowned out by All Right Now?

It was not doctored. Â Skipweasel was giving his post game "rally \'round the corpse" speech while the Stanford Band played a long version of All Right Now and the team (led by Richard Sherman getting his groove on) danced and celebrated. Â It was pretty sweet. Â In contrast, the UCLA band stood around for a few minutes, didn\'t even play their alma mater, and finally just left. Â
Cheers,

The Demon Deacons vs. the Cardinal Sins? Â This will be a classic battle of good vs. evil. Â Those guys have been rivals for a long time.
Or if you consider that Stanford represents the religious figure of cardinal, then Deacons vs. Cardinal is a classic intra-Church battle.
There are a lot of subtexts to this game.

It seems to depend on the sport. The four "Tobacco Road" schools in the ACC -- Wake Forest, Duke, UNC and NC State -- have been competing in sports for a long time. Each one hates the other three.
Wake Forest & North Carolina played the first intercollegiate football game in North Carolina back in 1888.
Wake Forest & Duke are both private and were the first two schools to have basketball teams in North Carolina.
Wake Forest\'s rivalry with NC State is based on geography: when WF was located in Wake Forest, NC, it was just a few miles from Raleigh, home of NC State. WF & NC State have met more times in basketball than any other ACC matchup and the schools\' once traditional baseball game on the Monday after Easter led to that day being declared a state holiday so all the state legislators could take time off and go watch.
Bonus trivia question: Which two athletes are WF\'s best-known grads? (Hint: One is pretty old and the other died young.)

I only have half of the trivia question, but Arnold Palmer is surely part of it.

I believe that Brian Piccolo was a WF football player.

Yep, Arnie won an individual national championship in golf at WF and Brian Piccolo played football there before his short-lived career with the Chicago B.ears.

Hasn\'t Tim Duncan earned a spot in the WF pantheon?

True, as has Chris Paul.
