Anyone watching UCLA/USC? - ahuang06 - 11-17-2012

It's still the first quarter - but UCLA looks like it's having an easy time marching down the field on Under Stanford Control. The team probably shouldn't look ahead - but I will, UCLA will be a tough game.

People have been talking about Mariota and Manziel, but Hundley is absolutely in their weight class. (Hopefully, after today, Hogan makes this discussion a foursome. No, Golson doesn't belong.)

UCLA up 24-0 now. Guessing there are a few phone calls being made to SC commits.

Not to mention phone calls to Pat Haden from irate U$C fans wanting LK fired.

USC really needed that drive. Big strike after big strike down the field, 24-7.

IF SC can avoid turnovers, I think they'll come back to eke this out. UCLA doesn't have the guys outside to contain the SC WR's.

But either way UCLA will be a tough game for us. Solid running game, big play TE, big, mobile QB....reminds me of our offense. Their D is not on our level though.

Barkley is well on his way to turning the program around 360 degrees.  He started in the Hunger Bowl, he could end in the Hunger Bowl.

Now 24-14.

Looks like U$C has officially awakened.

Actually I'm glad they did. A UCLA blowout would get me very worried about next week's game, regardless of what happens tonite.

So what would be more ideal in the situation where we beat Oregon?

Beating UCLA twice or beating UCLA next week then USC again? Either way is impressive but I'm rooting for UCLA.

SC has sacked Hundley five times. Party in the backfield in SoCal!

One game at a time. We won't need to worry about a UCLA twofer or a rematch against U$C if we don't get the job done tonight.

We'll get the job done tonight  ;D

Re: Anyone watching UCLA/the team Under Stanford Control? - dabigv13 - 11-17-2012

UCLA up 10 with 4 minutes...I think we'd definitely prefer USC to win for a few reasons- 1) I want USC to have some juice in the tank so they can take out ND, making them a less attractive pick for the Rose Bowl 2) If UCLA wins this game, they'll be within range of the top 14 in the BCS and trying to position themselves as an option for the Rose Bowl if Oregon goes to the NC. If they lose this game, the Stanford game means a lot less.

You make all kinds of sense, dabigv -- but darn it, it's somehow so satisfying to see $C lose. I hope that doesn't make me a terrible person.

I think we wanted SC to prevail but not for your reasons:

For us to care about the rose bowl, UCLA has to have 4 losses. No way they get ranked top 14 with 4 losses.

No, the reason is this might get Lane Kiffin fired. I'll always feel confident playing against a Lane Kiffin team.

Re: Anyone watching UCLA/the team Under Stanford Control? - Rando - 11-17-2012

If we beat Oregon then take out UCLA twice, we're going to be in the top 5 IMO.

Sorry, but I can't get upset about SC losing. Besides, we've got to take care of UCLA regardless of what happens tonight, and beating a highly ranked UCLA team will help with the rankings. Now, if SC can get back on its horse and beat the Fighting Frenchmen, life will be good.

But I doubt we end up ranked below UCLA if we beat them next week.  And, by beating USC this week, they likely get a bump in the polls.  As far as we are concerned, we need to make a good showing tonight, win or lose.  Obviously a win would be fantastic, but even a very competetive loss in which we play Oregon toe-to-toe into the fourth quarter, which really no team has done this year would probably not hurt us too badly. Especially as we are playing at their place.

I doubt this loss is a final nail in the coffin for Kiffin.  But if it coupled with another loss to UCLA next year that might do the trick (assuming the Trojans take a step back next year).  Without Barkley, I'm guessing a step back is likely.

And speaking of Draco, remember all the snide Kiffinisms about how Barkley changes the play at the line of scrimmage like other QBs, and Barkley is as accurate as other QBs, (ie Andrew Luck).  I believe even Barkley's former QB coach, Sarkisian, weighed in on the matter.  This season pretty much put those ideas to rest.

Mr. Barkley, I've seen Andrew Luck.  Andrew Luck was a good QB for us.  You sir, are no Andrew Luck.

*cut to deer-in-the-headlights stare by Draco* (though to be fair, I never heard him making all the comparisons)

Re: Anyone watching UCLA/the team Under Stanford Control? - dabigv13 - 11-17-2012

Yes of course I'd rather Lane stick around. And I'd rather UCLA remain as a doormat in the conference as well. Having two strong LA teams for recruits to go to is less ideal than if USC just dominates.

Oh well, I suppose this might allow us to boost our rankings if we win next week.

Anybody else gonna be at the Rose Bowl? Used to be my favorite tailgating spot until I heard they banned drinking games...beer baseball on Brookside Golf Course, awesome.

Re: Anyone watching UCLA/the team Under Stanford Control? - 76lsjumb - 11-17-2012

Okay, you're Jim Mora, Jr.

If Stanford beats Oregon tonight, what do you do next week?  If Oregon beats OSU, and you beat Stanford, you play Oregon @ Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game, right?  If you lose to Stanford, however, you play Stanford @ Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game.  At this point, I'm thinking most opposing coaches would prefer the latter to the former.

So, if you're Jim Mora, Jr., is it an opportunity to give your scrubs some significant playing time ...?  ;)

I like Barkley. Wish him well in the NFL. He is a likable guy but I love watching SC lose. And Kiffin.
