Brevin! - 97fan - 11-15-2012

Was I the last to know that Brevin Knight is a Pac-12 Network game analyst?

I would be a fan of this hire even if he was terrible, but he's actually doing a great job, especially for a rookie announcer. He's better informed about Stanford's roster, players' tendencies, etc., than any Fox Sports analyst in the last 20 years.

Re: Brevin! - washingtonismoney - 11-15-2012

Brevin's the best Stanford-related thing about the game. The team appears to have little instinct about putting away what should be a dramatically inferior Alcorn State team. Dawkins had continued his annual fascination with playing inferior players far more than necessary (last year, Jarrett Mann; this year, Gabe Harris).

At least there's Chasson, who really ought to be playing for a better team. (Huestis' growth has been fun too--he's an absolute monster on defense.)

Re: Brevin! - 97fan - 11-15-2012

WIM, It seems pretty clear to me that Dawkins is giving everyone a chance to play in these early games against cupcakes. So I'm not sure there's much to take from the fact that Gabe Harris got some minutes...given that pretty much the whole roster got minutes. (Except for Andy Brown, who barely played after lighting it up against Fullerton.)

We've got a number of tough games coming up, and it would be nice to have a rotation better established at this point, but I like that guys are having to compete for playing time. My guess is that Christian Sanders will wind up getting most of the minutes that you're worried Gabe Harris is going to get.

Re: Brevin! - Hey - 11-15-2012

All of our freshmen are showing lots of promise, Allen's three-pointer hit the bottom of the bottom of the net and Sanders continuously impresses.

Bummer that Andy Brown is out with a sprained ankle.  And we missed a lot of inside shots, but I was pleased to see Powell, Nastic, and Huestis take more of them than before.

He's not exactly a "rookie" announcer, per this from Wikipedia:

"Post-NBA -- Brevin Knight joined the Memphis Grizzlies broadcast team as color commentator for the 2010-11 season."

I'm not sure whether doing Pac-12 games is a step up or a step down... [but it's great to have him back in town!]

I stand corrected.

Brevin was fantastic tonight. I got so accustomed to hearing Marques Johnson that I'd forgotten what a good TV analyst sounds like.

Re: Brevin! - scorecard - 11-16-2012

- Brevin was great to listen to, loved hearing some of his memories/insights and loved hearing him rip on Cal
- Disappointing to see how few people were in the stands.  Not sure when Jabari Parker is visiting, but that is not going to be attractive.  Maples was awesome when it was packed, I hope the fans come back this year to support the team
- Huestis is my favorite player on the team, his jump shot looks so much better this year and his defense is ridiculous (may be the best wing defender we've had in the last 15 years?)
- Powell had an off shooting night, but still looked aggressive, impressed with how much better he looks this year; I was beginning to worry that he was not ever going to come around after he regressed last year
- Actually the whole team had an off-shooting night, take out Huestis' 8-10 shooting, and we were 14-54 for the night, 26% = yuck
- Sanders is much more impressive that his ranking appeared, not a high flyer, but very nice lateral quickness (almost glides) and good length and handle; hopefully they fixed the sideline scoreboard thing (with the creepy closeup of player's eyes when they score) from last game that said "Chritian Sanders".  Embarrassing
- Allen has some game as well, have seen some nice interior passing from him and nice stroke for his size
- Verhoeven has not had much except garbage time mop up duty, can't tell how he is going to be from what I have seen
- Nastic is a little stronger, but still looks pretty stiff and mechanical
- We are deep
- Assuming everyone stays, this team could be real interesting next year when the current freshmen are seasoned, will be interesting to see if Rimmer can contribute early and fill the donut hole in the middle (6'10, 250 lbs is a big boy; of course Peter Prowitt was the same size so will reserve judgement for now)

Re: Brevin! - burger - 11-16-2012

Last night was the first MBB game I've seen this year.

In the + column:
- Huestis on offense and defense.  Does he remind anyone else of a bulkier version of another recent Josh?
- Powell on everything but finishing at the hoop
- team defense
- offensive rebounding
- Sanders.  He moves really well.

In the - column:
- We let a team that Ken Pomeroy had in the bottom 10 in Division I last year stay in the game for over 20 minutes.
- Aaron Bright's shot (what happened to the guy who hit 66% on 3-pointers in the NIT??!!)
- Movement on offense.  Too much standing around and passing the ball back and forth.  Not enough drives and screens.

After watching one game, I'm optimistic but also concerned that this team may end up like last year's: solid on defense but offensively challenged, especially against bigger teams.  We'll know a lot more after the Belmont and Missouri games.

Re: Brevin! - washingtonismoney - 11-16-2012

It's not super-meaningful, but we've already slipped from mid 30s to 41 in Ken Pomeroy's rankings. The performances have not been good. If there were another coach I wouldn't be too exercised about it, but alas, this is supposed to be the show-me-something year for Johnny Dawkins.

Belmont, by the way, is ranked 26th.

Re: Brevin! - BobK - 11-16-2012

Brevin is the current Memphis announcer.  He is doing 10 PAC 12 games also.

Harris is now healthy and looks very good.  Why shouldn't we play everyone in an easy win?
