Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, then suicide - fullmetal - 09-14-2010

"Penn player who committed suicide had trauma-related brain condition."

Quote:PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A detailed examination of the brain of a Penn football player who committed suicide showed he had the same disease caused by hard hits that has been associated with NFL players.

The New York Times first reported Monday that Owen Thomas was in the early stages of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a disease that has been linked to depression and impulse control, primarily among NFL players.

A former Penn captain, the 21-year-old Thomas was found dead in April at his off-campus apartment. He had apparently hanged himself.

That is really awful. And this was Ivy League football, for heaven\'s sake... :-?

Also:

Quote:He\'s the second Penn football player since 2005 to commit suicide.

I can\'t imagine what the people involved with the program are going through right now.

We had a player commit suicide in the last year or so. He was a fullback, from around 1990, and his name is escaping me.

I wonder whether it was also related.

The former player who committed suicide was Maxwell Stevenson. He reportedly had bipolar disorder.

Vince Mulroy- but his affliction wasn\'t related to the Penn case, nor was he bi-polar.  He had been in great pain and ill health for a number of years.  Very sad.  He was a wonderful guy, father, and husband by all accounts. I hadn\'t seen him in years and didn\'t know of his health issues.

What a shame about Maxwell Stevenson. He was a beautiful person. He was in an a capella group and wore an artsy hat, not your typical big-time 250 lb college FB. A true Stanford student. I wish he\'d found his way out of whatever bullshit he was stuck in.

Stanford doesn\'t do a good enough job grounding people in reality in a healthy way. I think stanford is a bad school for anyone who\'s not on a very clear professional track.

Hopefully max is back with God.
