A few MBB notes - washingtonismoney - 11-10-2012

1) UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad ruled ineligible. That's big news--Muhammad was supposed to be their best player and will instead have to sit out the season. Certainly ups our odds in the conference race (though lessens our margin for error insofar as it weakens the perception of the conference.)

2) Stanford beat USF last night by 12. With any other coach I'd be inclined to write off some of the struggles to first-game stuff, but since it's Dawkins... The guy doesn't understand how to call a timeout to stop a run (he is consistently late) and his lineups are often poor. The offense frustrates me a fair bit too--a lot of times bright would draw a double after initiating a pick and roll...and there would be no movement to reflect the fact that the rest of the team was playing 4 on 3 ball.

3) Dwight Powell looks like an absolute beast. If Dawkins can't take this team to the tournament, he shouldn't just get fired, he should get immolated.

Powell/Huestis/Brown/Randle/Bright.

Huestis went 3-3 from 3pt. Looks like a different player also.

Most worrying thing was poor rebounding.

Re: A few MBB notes - Cadet84 - 11-10-2012

Nonexistent rebounding. The box score lists 3 offensive rebounds, I don't remember seeing any.  And this is against a much smaller team. Oy.

Re: A few MBB notes - scorecard - 11-11-2012

Powell indeed looked like a different player.  Upper body looks filled out, but it just looks like the light has come on for him.  Small sample size of course against overmatched competition, but reminded me a bit of how Fields just blossomed as a senior.  He was much more aggressive, and he looked more decisive with the ball (there were times last year when he was a turnover just waiting to happen, poor passing, bad handle, etc.)  Made some real highlight plays.  Hoping this carries over to the rest of the season.

Huestis may also have a breakout year, great defender on the perimeter, excellent timing on blocks.  He looked confident on his 3 pointers as well, squared up nicely and showed a clean stroke.

Our defense looked pretty good (again hard to tell due to level of competition), active, swarming, and long on the perimeter, switching everything.  However, the rebounding is a concern, especially considering how long we are.  Despite having a brobdingnagian size advantage, we do not seem to have anyone with a real nose for the ball other than maybe Huestis.  Or even a big body to keep the other team off the boards (in the vein of a Darren Allaway or Rob Little).  I was hoping Verhoeven would be that guy, but neither he or Allen hit the floor.

We will probably be vulnerable to a post player in the middle, but I don't think any of those exist in college basketball anymore.

We did seem to hit a major lull at the end of the first half where we looked a little lost as a team, and as washingtonismoney said, a timeout could have helped slow the momentum.

All in all, saw some good things and some areas for concern, but we are a deep team with a lot of size, and we should definitely make the tourney this year.

Re: A few MBB notes - Hey - 11-11-2012

Stanford and USF were near even in a really sleepy first half.  The tempo picked up a little in the 2nd half and Stanford went ahead by 15 and pretty much maintained that to the end.  Every time USF started to get some momentum, Dwight Powell would slash the lane and usually score--very reassuring to see this.

* I don't go to a lot of games, so I don't know what's normal, but it seemed to me that they spent a lot of time warming before the game and during half.

* The Stanford players in general seem like good athletes, but not really basketball savvy.

* All of the players can and will shoot three's.

* We don't have a low post scoring threat.  Josh Huestis tried more at the end of the game.  The bulk of Powell's points came on extremely fast drives from outside the key.

* Andy Brown is my favorite player.  He's intense and he seems to have a lot of court sense.  He's not the quickest player, but he was diving for loose balls, forcing turnovers, and not standing around on offense.

* Aaron Bright had a bad shooting night, but penetrated easily.

* Anthony Brown had a highlight drive and assist, but otherwise a really quiet night.

* Chasson Randle was unselfish, but I had a lot of confidence in him out there.
