Question re: "college near a BART" - AlbanyCardinal - 11-06-2012

Can someone explain to me the significance of substituting "college near a BART station" for "c.al" on this site? Is that a put down or an inside joke or something else that I'm unaware of?

It's a method by which the board insures that newcomers feel confused.

Re: Question re: "college near a BART" - yvonne - 11-06-2012

Farm93 came up with it. I think it's along the lines of "University of South Central" and "University of South Bend," except how significant can a place be if the most memorable thing about it is that it's near a transit stop?

Whatever the reason, it ticks off 59er fans, which is what's important.

Thanks for the explanation. I just notice many writing "c.al" to bypass it, and I like BART!

Re: Question re: "college near a BART" - Leftcoast - 11-06-2012

Like many on the Peninsula, my family is a little jealous of BART, a system we only use once a year to go to Big Game.

The jibe here isn't a put down of BART, it's that the most memorable part of Berkeley is the trip to their not-so-fair-city on BART.  And that is very, very true for my littlest Lefties who are in awe of a public transportation system that really works.

The cars are mostly filled with Red wearing fans when we get on at Union City or Fremont but then gradually turns Blue as we move North.    Still the mood is jovial until we arrive in Berkeley station and get heckled as "1 percenters" or worse by the street people.  (No real hassles in the campus proper this year - even on Frat row.)  Their feelings on Berkeley - the city is full of mean people and stay close to dad ..... Campus kind of pretty but still stay close to dad.  BUT it has a really cool BART station!

Re: Question re: "college near a BART" - jacketree - 11-06-2012

Newsflash.....BART is on the Peninsula!

I'm sure you and the little lefties know that one can actually ride to Berkeley on BART without crossing over the Bay or getting in a car, other than to drive to a Caltrain station as necessary. (Honestly, Millbrae is a lot faster than going to Union City or Fremont, unless you are more in the Valley than on the Peninsula.)

I would use my kids as human shields whenever venturing into Berkeley in a Stanford sweatshirt for a Big Game since their mother would insist on dressing the toe-heads in blue and gold. It certainly stuck with my daughter; not so much with my son (although how ironic that his alma mater is 'The Blue and Gold'.)  Cute kids are like wearing an orange vest and hard hat. You can go anywhere.  Best memory of that time remains explaining to my 4 y.o. son what 'Fox Stanford' meant while walking back to BART after the win in '98.

I have to say that I never had any real hassles from Calfan in Berkeley.  A few hassles from Calfan in Palo Alto. Go figure.

Thanks for the explanation. I just notice many writing "kal" to bypass it, and I like BART!

I don't think anyone writes Kal to bypass the filter, it's just the correct way to spell Kal.
