Andrew Luck. He's pretty good. - Hank 91 - 11-04-2012

Not only did Andrew Luck lead the Colts to a win (they're now 5-3, firmly in the playoff race), but he also set an NFL record in the process and tied another. His 433 yards passing is the best ever for a rookie quarterback, and his fourth 300-yard passing game ties Peyton Manning for the most ever by a rookie.

Still miss him, but I miss him a lot less than the day before yesterday.

His play is amazing.  Earlier today Luck was #4 on ESPN's QBR list.  Look at the names left in front of him, and be amazed.  The Colts story is now just so much bigger than the game of football, so it is great that a lot of people probably want the Colts to do well.

On the Stanford front, many programs would have fallen a lot after losing this type of #1 NFL draft pick.  7-2 is not that bad, and now Hogan is protected because he is technically succeeding Nunes.

FWIW - Luck in the NFL is probably going to pay dividends for Stanford recruiting for many, many years to come.

Again I was left rueing (ruing? rue-ing?) the Dolphins inability to do anything right, particularly to lose a lot of games for the number 1 pick last year.

The Colts are now the team I root for in the NFL.  Luck played an amazing game and he is doing it with a substandard supporting cast.  On offense, the only elite playmaker is Reggie Wayne.  On defense, they are average at best with Freeney and Mathis the two above-average players that stick out.

The RGIII wave has crested and is going back out to sea...finally.

I watched the first three quarters. It was a thing of beauty. The way he moves around in the pocket is just incredible. Dancing forward, backward, and side to side. And he has the receivers to make difficult catches, so he's not treating his WR's like they're wearing kid gloves. All last year I wondered what he would look like with a couple of top flight receivers, and I can't say I'm surprised. It's just uncanny how cool under pressure he is, even at that level. It could be a friendly game of flag football or the Superbowl, and I don't think his came would change.

I'll be watching the Colts for a long time, it seems. How much is the NFL kicking themselves for not giving him a little more prime time exposure?

But I won't be surprised if the RGIII hype kicks in again if he makes a few highlight reel plays and wins some games. And to their defense, many of those supporting RGIII admit that Luck is better now, but they believe that RGIII has more up side that will make him a difference maker after he's gotten the pro-set experience that Luck has lived and breathed for 3 years. I'm not buying it, but this argument will go on for at least a few years, until it's clear whose ceiling is higher.

I hate to make sweeping generalizations, but when you can outrun a guy with a broom, it doesn't surprise me that he doesn't bristle under pressure.

Then there's this fun stat that made the rounds yesterday:

Peyton Manning, 2012: 5-3; 2,404 passing yards.
Andrew Luck, 2012: 5-3; 2,404 passing yards.

I've seen those stat too. It's interesting that despite the yards being similar, Peyton has twice as many TDs. Luck was so good in the Red Zone in college, so it's interesting to see him struggle there, even though the rest of the game doesn't appear to present such a steep learning curve. A lot of that may have to do with the significant advantage our exceptional TEs have in the college game that is reduced when playing against NFL defenses. It's also strange seeing him throw the ball 40+ times a game. He has almost no running game with the Colts, and is carrying the offense (in addition to some receivers with good hands). It's very different than in college where often the best thing to do was to check into a running play at the line.
