Maybe I'm parsing Shaw's words too closely, but from this quote, it almost seems that Nunes may get the start next week while Hogan will get most of the snaps.

Am I reading too much into that?

I think Shaw was just trying to keep his cards close to his vest. Or maybe didn't want to announce a new starter to the press before talking to the team. At least I hope so. Really can't see Hogan not getting the start.

I read quote as Hogan starts but if there is problem another is ready to step in.Â
Will be tough game . . . and I believe 3 years ago we beat Oregon but lost to OSU???? Definitely hope team is VERY focused!!!

My guess is that Hogan might not know enough of the playbook to play in every situation, and therefore might not take the first snap if a few things happen. However, Hogan will play in most of the game situations.Â
It will be fun to watch, and I sure hope it works out because Hogan gives Stanford a much better chance at that major upset in Eugene and needs playing time.

Hogan is so refreshing after seeing Nunes struggle. He reminds me of Luck in some ways from the 2009 and 2010 seasons with his running ability.Â

I spent the entire pre-season wondering whether Nunes or Nottingham could be our Tee Martin. Turns out I should have been wondering about Kevin Hogan, the guy with the most similar game to the aforementioned Mr. Martin.

Pcgoode, I was thinking the same thing. Just watched the P10 channel replay (was not as good this time as previously, quite a few glitches, plays out of sequence, etc, but still a very cool feature), and Hogan's running ability was very Luck-like. He wasn't blazing fast, wasn't exactly shifty, but clearly an athletic guy who could put some punishment on a defender.
Like everybody else, I was really excited to see what Hogan could do. He played a good game against a bad defense. On short throws he put the ball in a good spot where the receiver could get some yards. His longer throws were ok- got bailed out with really good catches by both Toilolo and JRP (great game from him btw, it was a money catch and the double reverse was fantastic and should've been a TD [is there any team in the country that has been incorrectly denied more goalline TD calls??]) . Definitely does not throw the prettiest ball. The entire time he looked like a guy who was just barely keeping it all together, but that being said we still put together good drives and I don't recall many poor decisions. Bottom line he has a lot of room to grow, and I can see a better defense frustrating him, but he has a playmaking ability that I didn't see from Nunes.
I can see Oregon State going much differently, their defense is solid. But Hogan has an x-factor to him, and it doesn't seem like he's going to be careless with the ball. Definitely have at least a glimmer of hope against Oregon now.

I simply can't imagine that we'll see Nunes taking any meaningful snaps for the foreseeable future.
