Based on the LA Times article linked from garvin's article, it seems this is not at all a new thing. Just before the USC-Stanford game, the backup kicker switched his number to that of the injured starting kicker.

None of this is suprising of course. Kiffin is a grade-A douche.

From the L.A. Times article:

"Wood, the freshman kicker, was listed as No. 39 to start the season. Then, in the week leading up to the Stanford game, USC's news release listed him as No. 6. But before the game, with kicker Andre Heidari absent after knee surgery, Wood said special teams coach John Baxter instructed him to switch to Heidari's No. 48.
Kessler said it was also Baxter who instructed him before last Saturday's game to don No. 35 for the first half.
"Coach Baxter told me to put it on, so I was like, 'All right. Yes sir,' " said Kessler, adding that he was "trying to look big" like the more burly Negrete. "[Tailback] D.J. Morgan came up to me and said, 'Yeah, you look like a running back.' "
USC makes Baxter available to the media only on Wednesdays. A USC spokesman said Baxter declined a request to be interviewed Tuesday."

So S.C. has a coach in charge of Deceptive Jersey Changes?  And he even has a specific day of the week on which he takes questions from the media??  That's impressive...

Come to think of it, our Deceptive Jersey Changes Coach this season [whoever he may be] has really been doing a terrible job...I can't remember being fooled once!  (Unless, of course, the starting QB for the past few games has ACTUALLY been Nottingham...)  ;D

The "6" and the "8" looked somewhat similar from way back in the stands in Memorial Stadium, but I doubt the font similarity fooled many coaches in blue.

Still love the Fox Hogan comments though.  It was something like, "Switching QBs just doesn't work!....Hogan rolls...Touchdown Stanford!"

That was classic!

The LA Times article is better written than the USA Today article. USA Today forgot about the "to deceive the opponent" part of the rule in part of the article and was yammering that changing jersey numbers on the day of the game is illegal, period. Good thing it's not, or Cuddy would have been in trouble last season.

More questionable antics, U.SC fined by Pac-12... http://tinyurl.com/a9c5voz

Edit: Given the Kiffin voting incident, the cheap attempt to gain an advantage through changing uniform numbers and now this... Maybe a loss to ASU and/or ND and Pat Haden re-evaluates Kiffin.

When I heard about the deflated balls thing, I just laughed. It's hard to hate someone who stoops to such petty, dumb shit. The best part about it is, you know Kiffin thought he was a brobdingnagian genius when he thought of the idea, too.

I don't know Publius, the likes of Andrew Viterbi (co-founder of Qualcomm), Andy Pearson (former chairman & CEO of PepsiCo/Yum Brands), Paul Orfalea (founder of Kinko's), Steve Saleen (founder and CEO of Saleen Performance), Chris DeWolfe (founder and CEO of MySpace), Jon Huntsman Sr. (founder of Huntsman Corp), James Jannard (founder of Oakley), and Ray Irani (CEO of Occidental Petroleum) may take issue with that statement.

But yeah, that doesn't change the fact that Kiffin seems to be equal parts a**hole and goofball.

First of all, two thumbs up to garvin for this thread.  On a board that is sometimes bitterly divided, he has hit upon a topic that can bring us all together as we move forward into the rest of the season:  Lane Kiffen.

Also, I can't help thinking that it's probably good that the "deflated balls thing," as WIM calls it, happened AFTER this year's game at Stanford -- I don't think the Band could have exercised sufficient restraint to avoid doing a halftime show that would almost certainly have gotten them suspended for many years.  Of course, there's always next season at the Colisseum...

it would be a direct contravention of the Band's most important reason for existence to overlook deflated ball references next year!  sigh :p

Somewhere in all of this, there is a joke. Perhaps Jonnyo53 can help. Maybe there should be a board text replacement: something like, "the coach with deflated balls."
