Lotsa love for Marecic - Spiny_Norman - 08-31-2010

Harbaugh has a man-crush on Owen Marecic but we have known that since OM\'s freshman year.  This SI writer feels the love too.

Quote:Somebody needs to start a campaign for Owen Marecic. Voldemort, Walter Camp Award -- I don\'t care. Maybe somebody can design the Marecic Trophy. It will feature a cast-bronze football player trying to tackle himself.

Re: Lotsa love for Marecic - fullmetal - 08-31-2010

Quote:Harbaugh\'s wife, Sarah, told him he looks at Marecic "like somebody else would look at a beautiful woman."

Marecic might be glad he\'s a graduating senior...

The article\'s great.  EUTM everywhere!

I love the "wise words" session alluded to in the article. Apparently, Coach Harbaugh periodically invites players to address the team about football or whatever. What a great way to foster communication, leadership, and team bonding!

Probably every team member has something to share with a team, but not everyone feels comfortable doing so unless they\'re invited. I\'ve coached for a gajillion years and never considered this concept before (mostly because I like to talk a lot to my teams), but I\'m definitely going to implement it if I coach again.

----------
"I remember freshman year, I swear I didn\'t hear him say a word until he was brought up to say wise words after practice, about halfway through training camp," Luck said.

Wise words, Luck said, is when players share "a lesson they\'ve learned about football. It\'s really an open platform to say anything you want. I remember he went up for the first wise words, and he spoke so eloquently. He says some really funny things. He\'s a hilarious guy, actually."

I was struck by the same part of this story, GG, and as a youth sports coach (and former Stanford athlete who fondly remembers his coach hosting a different form of intra-team philosophical discussions every Friday before each season began), I immediately printed the article and added it to my file... hoping I can figure out how best to incorporate something similar into a routine for younger kids.

What a great article! Just one more reason why I love rooting for Stanford athletes.
