How Many Games Will Stanford Win in 2010? - Spiny_Norman - 08-31-2010

As we near the start of the season, it\'s time once again for Cardboard predictions.  Will the defense improve or will Stanford still have to score 50 points to beat high powered opponents?  Will Andrew Luck demonstrate that he can carry a team to greater heights?  Or will he again struggle in close games (see Arizona, Cal in 2009)?  Register your expectation for the 2010 season.

Reality overcame me and wrestled me to the ground, so I stayed sort of in the middle of the road...apparently siding with the majority. But I\'m sticking with 13 wins in my heart until proven otherwise.

My brain\'s on vacation, so hello 13 wins :)

So hard to imagine 11-13 wins.

At the same time though, no one will be looking at Stanford as an automatic win.

Had to go with the 9-10 zone, but see 11-12 as more likely than 7-8.

Debated 9-10 vs 7-8 but was inspired by Fullmetal\'s red shift insanity to pull the trigger for the higher figure.   My brain must be on vacation too ..... just shorter and not out of phone range.

I certainly think it would not take a miracle to win 13 games.  Every game is winnable.  People have to stay healthy.  Coaches need to maximize player strengths.  The secondary must hold.

Oregon?  Stanford beat \'em last year.  Both teams will step up their game.  We\'ll see who\'s made more improvement.

Oregon State?  Hopefully an improved defense will catch up with the known quantity of the Rodgers brothers.  If our receivers catch the sure-fire touchdowns, we\'ll be fine offensively.  OL should work together to neutralize Stephen Paea.  Revenge game.

USC?  Undermanned team--maybe run no-huddle, power sets all over them until they collapse. Punish them.

Washington?  Too many sophomores looking for their groove.  Kavario Middleton is the only receiver that I remember hearing about last year, and if the secondary holds (and the defense doesn\'t overpursue), Locker\'s running shouldn\'t be a problem.  I haven\'t heard noise from their defense...

Arizona?  Nic Grigsby is a known quantity.  Our defense has to redeem themselves after allowing victory to slip away.  Outgun and punish them.  Another revenge game.

There are a few ifs, but each team has its ifs as well.  Who else can really challenge?

Have to love the optimism.

But 13-0 is pretty close to a miracle and there are plenty of teams that can challenge.  Considering that Stanford hasn\'t lost fewer than 3 games in a season since Abbey Road came out (on vinyl) and they only played 10 games that year, I think 10-3 is a reasonable ceiling.  I\'d be stoked with that anyway.

It isn\'t that hard to see 6-6 with or without major injuries, particularly if the linebackers are slow and the offense without Gerhart isn\'t the same as the offense with Gerhart.

Here\'s a 6-6 season.  I hope not, but this isn\'t insane:

Sac State - win or quit football   (W)
at UCLA - once again need one final stop in Rose Bowl (L)
Wake - why not (W)
at ND - see week 2 (L)
at Oregon - Autzen\'s rocking for revenge  (L)
USC - pissed off team with talent (L)
WSU - jeez (W)
at UW - Halloween, surprise team of year (L)
AZ - I said 6-6 so they better (W)
at ASU - ditto (W)
at UC - \'trette has lorded this over me long enough (W)
OSU - Beavers peaking (L)

The good thing is that wet blanket posts have just as much impact on the actual season as To Infinity and Beyond (13-0 Woot!) posts do.  Looking forward to seeing what happens when it happens.

Rose bowl, baby. Rose bowl.

But I\'m not ruling out the National Championship game.
