Kyle Bonagura, who was excellent tweeting and otherwise covering Stanford for CBS Sports last year, has joined Rivals' Cardinal Sports Report.

As a Rivals subscriber weighing reup-ing his membership (and maybe my procrastination is the truth staring me in the face) , it was disappointing to see how little conversation went on there. But they keep trying and it's nice to see they're showing signs of life.

The purpose of Rivals isn't to hold a board. It's to draw revenue. If they can attract readers who want to read their content, great for them.
I'm sure not going to pay to read a message board.

... is that the editorial staffs of the Bootleg and Cardinal Report can't possibly know everything and, in the case of both sites, most times simply aren't connected enough to develop some of the really good stories lurking out there. Stanford football has a corps of football mavens and recruitniks who regularly break stories otherwise unavailable to the unconnected. The more active a message board is, the greater likelihood that something only some insiders know will find its way to us normal mortals. Also helps to have a corps of ex-players and knowledgeable people to provide reality checks when posters opinionizing just gets too obtuse. Cardinal report lacks that half of the game no matter how good the editorial staff and how hard they work.
I think the vast difference between the Bootleg open board and the subscription board proves that people absolutely will pay. But the community here proves people don't have to.

Look, TLV01, you've made your preference clear. Some of us prefer other options. People can come here for conversation. It's free. Rivals has great recruiting information from solid reporters.

Message boards can be subscription or delightfully free. I prefer....BOTH. I like the conversation here and I like some of the conversation there. Jeez. Don't be so prickly.

I was excited to see that Bonagura had joined the Cardinal Report, but only because it will consolidate the reporting that I like to read. That being said, this board will always be the first place I look for opinions and discussion about the team. Nothing wrong with having two destinations for two different purposes.
