Yesterday in opponent attrition: 59ers edition - washingtonismoney - 07-25-2012

59ers were hit by a treble of attrition:
1) starter-contender OG Dominic Galas tore a pectoral muscle and will be out for three months--i.e. basically the season.
2) incoming recruits Raymond Ford (high-three-star/four-star corner) and Maurice Bennett (two-star-ish DT) didn't make the grades cut.

I believe the 59ers have had the most extensive and deepest offseason attrition of any of our opponents.

I wonder whether the 59ers will try to pull in some Penn State guys at this late date.

It's quite embarrassing for a school that touts itself as "the #1 public university" to bring in guys that can't even pass the NCAA clearinghouse.  Ford was a potentially legit player.  However, Bennett was a very marginal recruit, a hail mary offer in the aftermath of Lupoi leaving and basically turning all Cal DL recruits into dust in the process.

I think Cal is getting a different reputation for how it educates football players. Shaq Thompson, who had been vacillating between Cal and Washington, gave a verbal to Cal at an All Star game and ultimately signed with Washington cited academics as part of the reason for eventually signing with UW. Sure, the Tosh thing played a part, but reading his Tweets made it clear that he wasn't sold on Cal.
