Stanford Alumni Association names Award of Excellence recipients - yvonne - 05-27-2012

SAA named 15 Award of Excellence recipients, given annually to student-athletes who "[demonstrate] a sincere commitment to the university through involvement, leadership, and extraordinary Stanford spirit." Among the familiar names are Andrew Luck, MT3, and Nneka Ogwumike, but let's also give it up for:

Rob Andrews (men's swimming)
Evan Barry (men's volleyball)
Timmy Boone (wrestling)
Chris Derrick (cross country/track and field)
Clayton Holz (men's soccer)
Bradley Klahn (men's tennis)
Brad Lawson (men's volleyball)
Tyrone McGraw (track and field)
Amaechi Morton (track and field)
Jack Trotter (men's basketball)
Miles Unterreiner (cross country/track and field)
Koko Urata (synchronized swimming)

Fifteen honorees and only two are women.  Really?

They couldn't find anyone from a national championship women's water polo team?

Yvonne, I don't think that the SAA award is limited to student athletes.  According to the announcement, there were 103 honorees from the class of 2012.  Of those 103, 15 are student-athletes.  Congratulations to all of the Award of Excellence recipients!

It still seems uneven to me.  Only two female athletes distinguished themselves "through involvement, leadership, and extraordinary Stanford spirit," while thirteen male athletes did?

Cool to see Tyrone McGraw on the list as an apparently graduating senior. Looks like he took the six-year plan, but that matters not (except to the debt collectors). Congrats to McGraw and everyone on the list.

For those newer fans unfamiliar with McGraw's story, check this out
