You thought Pac-16 soap opera got weird? - Redrum - 08-18-2010

Dig this:   The Salt Lake paper is reporting that BYU is bailing out of the Mountain West Conference to go independent in football  and joining the WAC  (its old home for decades) in other sports.  4 guaranteed football games vs. WAC also in the mix.   More weirdness; Boise St. might not bolt WAC for MWC afterall.

I hear there is also pressure for San Diego State, Fresno State and San Jose State to all be in the same conference. Also, UC Davis aspires to D1 and UC San Diego is considering it.

Are religious schools required to play football as independents?

Man, it just gets weirder and weirder - Redrum - 08-18-2010

Wait a couple of hours and the world flips three times.

Now, Fresno St. announces it is going to join the Mountain West.  A similar invitation is out to Nevada Reno, which has not announced a decision.   BUT...

If Nevada and Fresno bolt,  the WAC is stripped of all its quality teams.
That leaves Idaho, New Mexico St., San Jose St., Utah St. and Hawaii to soldier on.   Moscow, Las Cruces, Logan...San Jose becomes the New York City of the WAC.

Supposedly La. Tech and UTEP  may switch conferences.  La. Tech leaving the WAC for Conference USA.  UTEP coming back to the WAC.

San Jose St. boards are trending to gun-in-mouth solution.  Talk of moving to the Big West or Big Sky or just dropping football (hence all athletics) or ....well, just hand them the .357

BYU going independent for football is insane.  There are no quality programs that will sign home and home contracts with them--what would be the upside?  They will be lucky to bring mid-level teams from the major conferences to Provo.

The MWC gutting of the WAC screws BYU - Redrum - 08-19-2010

The WAC would have to apply for an NCAA waiver for conference recognition, having dropped below 8 members.  Sure they could recruit replacements,  but the three departing schools were THE revenue generators for the conf.  No way Cal Poly SLO is going to replace that.   AND...BYU has to plan now for it\'s other sports.  They could dominate the WAC...but who would want to commit to a conference that is melting before our eyes?  If La. Tech bolts the WAC I think they are in the vertical plunge.

I agree with Garvin.  Don\'t think BYU would get $10+ million they think their own network games would generate,  but they might double the MWC payout.   Seems like the MWC strategy is ALL about getting to automatic BCS bid status.  Does a BCS bid generate enough revenue to pay for the additional members?    But as garvin pointed out, the problem is scheduling.   BYU could be everybody\'s pre-season darling,  but with most schools tied up in conference schedules mid-season and late,  who of any stature  is going to jack their schedules (and the schedules of their conferences) just to accomodate a game with BYU?   Does not compute.  Does not compute.
