Heartbreaking :(

Re: Stanford women's volleyball player dies - Gauss - 03-26-2012

My condolences.

I can't even imagine what must feel like for the twin sister-fellow Stanford student-Volleyball team-mate...
Damn onions.

Oh no!

I agree - it is heart breaking. We're of volleyball fans and from Santa Barbara. thanks for sharing.

I don't have a clue what to say, except: that poor family. To have an ostensibly very healthy 19-year-old athlete die out of the blue. Wow.

There was a tree at Maples that was covered with notes left by well wishers that I saw when attending NIT games last week. I googled the player name to see if something had happened and could find no news.

Very sad.

The Stanford community has been hit hard this year with premature deaths.  Just awful.

Truly sad news.

Sam Wopat has a twin, Carly, also on the Stanford volleyball team and a Volleyball Magazine All-American. Here is a feature story about them from The Daily a few months ago.

I hope that Carly can find some joy in her chosen sport, but obviously the circumstances make it very difficult for that to happen easily. Hopefully the best part of team sports, the close bonds developed between players, can help her through this difficult time.

Correction: Sam was admitted on the 17th.

Re: Stanford women's volleyball player dies - needle - 04-02-2012

The Daily also reported Wopat was hospitalized following an attempt at suicide, I believe for the first time corroborating what had been speculated about in various online comments and no doubt in many real world conversations as well.

Wopat was too much of a public figure for the cause of death to be kept a secret. I hope publishing this fact--assuming The Daily has the story right--doesn't cause the family more distress. When the story broke, I wondered if it was possibly unclear whether Wopat intentionally harmed herself.

As sad as that makes me, I can only imagine how much worse her family feels right now.

Re: Stanford women's volleyball player dies - yvonne - 04-02-2012

Wow. I've witnessed the profound and permanent effect suicide can have on a family.
