A lot of interesting stuff in there that I'm sure we'll all pick over. Mostly about depth chart stuff, but the more you hear him talk the more you realize how crowded it looks on paper. I'm sure it'll be fun to follow this spring and summer.

Isn't that the truth. To me, the tell was when he started discussing James Vaughters and Noor Davis. He started talking about how he wanted Vaughters to make a leap from his first year to his second, like Shayne Skov, from (paraphrasing) being a good player to someone you have to look out for. Then he seemed to imply Davis was also around that level. Which got me thinking about the depth chart and wondering who, exactly, they'd be taking snaps from (especially since Shaw deemed the Thomas and Murphy OLB pair as one of the best in the country.)

It seems Jordan Richards replaces MT3.

Most will say Carrington replaces Howell.  Unless he makes a big leap from '11 to '12, I don't see it.  Shaw says he wants the best tacklers at Safety and Carrington os not that.

Who replaces Masifilo? 

I simply can't believe the depth of talent in the front seven.  Unheard of at Stanford.

With the way Randy Hart has been coaching up the d-line, and the number of candidates, I have no idea who it is, but I'm excited. Mauro and Anderson got a lot of time last year; apparently Charlie Hopkins was named as a defensive redshirt to look out for by Derek Mason. And then there's the possibility that Aziz Shittu might step in and do damage.

(I agree that Carrington absent a leap is unlikely to start. Maybe Ed Reynolds? I do think the coaches should consider Wayne Lyons, safety.)

just my opinion but I think Ben Gardner and Henry Anderson start and Mauro, Hopkins, and Shittu are in the rotation - and Shittu could pull a Skov and start by midseason. And Carrington's biggest weakness is tackling so I can see someone like Hoffpauir coming in and taking his spot. Ed Reynolds should be back but he's an unknown at this point and I don't see Wayne Lyons moving back to Safety when he was the only CB who could cover Owusu last year in practice. And Richards probably starts at FS - Shaw seems very high on him. And Vaughters could move to MLB since Noor Davis and Kevin Anderson are both playing OLB, Pat Skov seems to be intent on staying at FB, and Hemschoot is undersized for 4-3 MLB. I think Shaw is grooming him to take over for Skov next year.

Can glean a few interesting tidbits from Wilner's preview of spring ball (http://www.mercurynews.com/stanford-cardinal/ci_20057935):

1. Apparently Nottingham and Hogan have the biggest arms among the quarterbacks while Hogan has the quickest feet.
2. Montgomery and Wilkerson out of spring practice?
3. Oddly, Kevin Danser and Khalil Wilkes are mooted to fill in for the open OL spots. I say oddly because the article has Danser at tackle, something I'd never heard before. Unclear whether this is just Wilner speculation or whether he's actually gotten it from somewhere.
4. In a similar vein, Carrington and Richards are named the favorites to start at safety, with Reynolds right on their heels.

Wilner is not the most astute observer of player personnel. 

It makes sense "not to take any chances with" Ty Montgomery.  He's the only WR that has proven he can make big plays.  Interesting to hear Shaw say Kelsey Young is going to play a RB/slot role.  Perhaps he'll make the full jump to WR in Spring?

I am dying to know who replaces Masifilo. Henry Anderson seems a good candidate... the University of South Central wanted him. At linebacker I come up with 7 guys who seem as though they should be starters but maybe Skov doesn't come all the way back or maybe Vaughters and Lueders don't start until they are junior or senior. (They both played more earlier in the season than later, I thought.) In the secondary maybe there too a lot of guys will play. But I can't believe that 3 of the 4 starting positions aren't likely pretty much already settled with Terrence Brown and Lyons at corners and certainly Richards at one of the safeties. More likely strong safety?

he'll play slot like De'Anthony Thomas. I'm excited - he absolutely torched Thomas when Norco Played Crenshaw his senior year and Thomas did nothing that game. No point in having someone so explosive and talented sit due to the depth at RB.

I'm excited about Young, too.  But of course he didn't torch De'Anthony Thomas, he torched the Crenshaw defense.  I hope Young has the same kind of impact that Thomas has had in Oregon, but I'm not reading too much into one HS game when they faced, not so much each other, but the defense of the other team.

not sure on the injury but I like Wilkerson a lot too. Kind of Trent Richardson like to Stepfan Taylor's Marc Ingram.

And I know Young didn't torch Thomas back in HS, but Norco's defense wasn't exactly teeming with D1 talent. From what I remember Thomas had under 100 yards rushing. I'm too lazy to google it.

I recall reading, maybe in a recap of a Shaw interview, that Wilkerson had a hamstring issue.  I like Wilkerson's size and speed, though I was a bit disappointed by his performance last season.  It seemed like a lot of very short runs, with a couple of longer runs that make his average look a lot better.  But I also think the rotation of RBs last year might have contributed to that.  It must be hard to get into any kind of rhythm if you are only getting a few snaps each game.  And, in a classic Catch-22, if you aren't really flashing brilliance in those few attempts, you are not likely to earn a lot more when you have backs like Taylor and Gaffney in front of you.

Young Money, like you I'm really looking forward to seeing Young on the field.  I know Youtube videos are not the best way to evaluate a player, but often they are all we have, and I recall thinking Young was a real slasher, the kind of back who sees a hole, makes one sharp cut, and is gone.  Provided he has the vision to see the hole, I love that kind of runner: not too much dancing around, nice combination of speed and power.  Actually, a bit like Stephan Taylor.

Young doesn't quite remind me of any RB I've ever seen, off the top of my head.  Most guys when they run have the same stride all the time.  Young has a burst, with short, choppy steps as he gets going and maneuvers through traffic, but when he hits open field he seems to switch to a longer stride.  This suggests he has quick feet and an efficient stride to gain ground. 

Not too many clips of him catching the ball in this video, but there are a couple.  Given he is a bigger/stronger guy than DeAnthony Thomas, it seems there might be another player that would be a better analog.  I'm quite intrigued to see what Young can do.

That's the one.  I guess what I'm seeing is a RB who is always running north-south.  He can definitely cut and make people miss, but he's not a Reggie Bush/Barry Sanders type who will juke a lot and jump side-to-side to get free.  If you are Sanders or Bush you can get away with some of that stuff (well, for Sanders, you can get away with it all the time).  But a lot of backs have to learn to be more decisive.  Ricky Watters, the great ND/49ers back comes to mind; and Bush, too, has become more decisive over the course of his NFL carreer, IMO.  Regardless of how productive Young turns out, it looks to me like he makes up his mind and goes toward the goal line (even when he is 80 yards or so away).  Of course, that evaluation is from looking at a highlight reel of his top plays.  But I'm excited to see how he performs this year.  I expect we'll see some competition between Young and Remound Wright.  FWIW, Wright I recall received a lot of compliments for his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield when he was attending recruiting camps.  Just another weapon for the coaches to work with.
