Cory Booker to be 2012 Commencement Speaker - 82lsju - 02-07-2012

Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, N.J., since 2006 and a Stanford graduate, will be the 2012 Commencement speaker at Stanford University.

Stanford's 121st Commencement Weekend, June 16-17, will also feature a Class Day lecture by Larry Diamond, a Hoover fellow and professor of political science and sociology, and a Baccalaureate address by Sister Joan Chittister, author and co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women.

Cory Booker was fantastic in the round table discussion on the state of K-12 education in the US that Charlie Rose hosted during last year's reunion weekend.  I think he is going to do extremely well (not that he hasn't already) in the political arena and will make most Stanford alums proud.

Perhaps he can take on "Senator" Noor Davis as one of his interns....

Class of 2006, Tom Brokaw....worst speaker ever? I say yes. Though, m

Incorrect. Class of 2009 Anthony Kennedy was the worst. If you doubt me, find a class of 2009 person and say something approximating the following phrase at him/her, "So tell me about Anthony Kennedy's theory as to why Legally Blonde proves the Chinese are yearning for democracy."

The selection of Daniel Moynihan in 1975 caused a of extremely large proportions uproar for weeks before Commencement that year, with many demanding the invitation be rescinded. It wasn't, of course, hence the walkout.

Stanford followed up in 1976 with the much safer, quieter choice of HUD Secretary Carla Hills (Stanford '55), who was, I believe, the first woman to give the Commencement address at Stanford. (She was also the first woman to serve as Secretary of Housing & Urban Development, appointed by President Gerald Ford). I have no idea what she spoke about; all I remember was hoping she would keep her speech short because we were baking in those black robes on a bright, sunny June day in Frost Amphitheater.

And Garvin, in case you're still wondering, Moynihan's speech to your class was entitled “Can the System Work?”.

My first thought ... "What!  Extra point is Richard Lyman?".  My second thought, "Why is EP sorry?"
