Re-branding the Pac-10 - BrevinsBest - 07-27-2010

Here\'s a very interesting article on the re-branding of the Pac-10 and the global perspective the new commissioner has. It also examines the concept behind the new logo.

Re: Re-branding the Pac-10 - Spiny_Norman - 07-27-2010

The logo is supposed to represent a wave crashing into a mountain.

I thought it looked like a crescent moon rising over the mountain to indicate the late hour for football and basketball games on the east coast.  Either that or an alliance with Turkey.

Andy Staples can\'t spell: "sleaker"...really?

Looks more like a pregnant logo to me.  Couldn\'t intuitively make heads or tails out of the device under the A (and the PAC is just ugly).

The new "Pac-8"

In the Pac-10 video each school seemed to get one famous affliate while the school name was displayed.  The order was UCLA, C.a.l, Oregon, USC, Stanford, Stanford, Arizona State, Washington and then Arizona.  Stanford actually got 3 affliates up, which was nice I guess.

But the odd thing is that Washington State and Oregon State did not get included.  Certainly that was a mistake.

OSU gets a random football player visual and I think a baseball celebration.   Wazzu gets far less as they seem to get cheerleaders in a split second scene.  The other eight seemed to get much more, so even on the visual impressions the two were shortchanged.

The obvious omission - the greatest golfer to ever strike a ball, a fine representative of an institution famed for both its athletic and academic prowess, ... oh wait, never mind.

Re: Re-branding the Pac-10 - GoodGrief - 07-27-2010

i do really like the innovative thinking that this new pac-12 commissioner is exhibiting. he\'s clearly not content with the status quo, which Tom Hansen was striving for. The Pac-16 was such a tantalizing miss.

I give this new commissioner a lot of credit except for that, you know, results thing.

I actually like the logo. The old one was pretty bland, and this one I think is more interesting. Maybe I\'m a philistine?

The Nike swoosh / Pac-10 logo comparison is - Redrum - 07-27-2010

...is just wack.

Nike= simple.   It told no "story",  the meaning was attributed and grew by association.

Pac-10  = busy, busy, busy.    Not content with being simply recognizable, it tries to instruct people on its iconic meaning.  Waves crashing into mountains.  Very high-concept.   Or...a prediction from the Mayan calendar for the end of the traditional West Coast and the birth of a new one in Steamboat Springs?

Goodness knows what you think of the SEC logo, which even I think is too bland.  One of my criteria for logos is readability, and this new one kinda flunks that test.

But GG how does that explain Jello?

Oh....I thought this Jello conversation was about. - Redrum - 07-28-2010

Stanford\'s pass defense.

Man, this summer season seems particularly long.

I agree with glenn, BTW.  A guy who sees only in the marketing spectrum has much in common with how USC has run their athletic dept. and football program.   Sends shivvers down my spine.   But some supposedly very sane and responsible people are giving Scott his permissions, so he\'s not like a single, semi-mad rogue operator on this.  The schools\'  fingerprints will be all over this one, too.

Uhh, okay, I confess I have absolutely no idea what this Jello reference means. Please elaborate.

If you evaluate somebody on their thoughts, actions, and their results, so far, I\'m in favor of Larry Scott: innovative decision-making, aggressive action, and just the wrong outcome (which might have been avoided with better pre-planning, but oh well).

Let the record reflect, that early on, I was in favor of Bob Bowlsby and Jim Harbaugh for their thoughts and actions even before they started producing results.

And let's conveniently ignore the fact that early on I was also in favor of Buddy Teevens

Re: Re-branding the Pac-10 - needle - 07-29-2010

On this board, I recall denouncing Bowlsby\'s hire of Harbaugh as an act of "hubris."

So, no need to write tiny, GoodGrief. Confession in Verdana 11 is good for the soul.

Anyone else want to \'fess up to any Stanford-related negativism that turned out to be wrongly placed?

Does always predicting 5-7 or 6-6 season - Redrum - 07-29-2010

count as a confessible negativism?

Well, one season I lost my bearings and allowed for a 7-4 upside.   I was punished by 1-11.
