Jeremy Lin, the one who got away - Sue_Ann_Duckett - 07-24-2010
Here\'s a story about Jeremy Lin, the Palo Alto High guard that Trent Johnson didn\'t want. (As the story points out, a lot of other people, including Randy Bennett at St. Mary\'s, also took a pass.) Lin has just signed with the Warriors.

St. Trent made a mistake? Â Gotta be Bowlsby\'s faul - Redrum - 07-24-2010
If ONLY Â Bowlsby had doubled Trent\'s salary, Â he wouldn\'t have been so grumpy and wouldn\'t have been so dismissive of Lin. Â Pac-10 crowns would have ensued, basketball would have been so popular that football would become a side show and Wlat would still be coach because nobody would care, Â they\'d all be over in the new, expanded Maples Home Depot Arena.
I wonder. Given the new relationship that the football (and Dawkins\' basketball)program  have been able to construct with dean Shaw and the Montag,  if Trent had just been a
little more patient could he have been able to bring in the kind of athlete that would have allowed him to compete on the level he wanted? Â Or, would even some flexibility at Montag not satisfy his desire for a competitive team? Â Or, was the talent gap excuse just bull****, Â it was all about the Benjamins?

Johnson only mentioned admissions much later, after he had signed with LSU. And he had worked as Mike Montgomery\'s assistant and lead recruiter for several years. He knew all about Stanford admissions, in detail, before he took the head coaching job. LSU offered to double his salary, while Stanford seemed to be in no hurry to get him signed to a new contract. What would you do?

I would keep my mouth shut about my former point guard.

Johnson behaved very poorly toward his former players once he arrived at LSU, no question.

Trent was never much of a coach anyway, so I wasn\'t too disappointed when he left.

Trent has a .568 winning percentage as a head coach.
Dawkins has a .52 winning percentage.
Five years from now, who will have a higher winning percentage?
I guess everybody here thinks Dawkins.
Time will tell.

Lin wasn\'t recruited, because at the time, Lin wasn\'t good enough. Â
In 2007, Harvard lost to Stanford 111-56 and in 21 minutes of play as a starting shooting guard, Lin got 0 points on 0 for 6 shooting, had zero assists, five fouls and a turnover. Â Nine Harvard players scored, including six reserves, but Lin didn\'t get a point. Â He fouled out in 21 minutes. Â To be fair, he led the team in steals with 2.
It was the sixth highest score in Stanford history and the third highest margin. Â The guy he was guarding, Goods, scored 17 points on 5 of 6 shooting from three point range...and Goods did that when he was ill. Â He only played 16 minutes. Â Some of Jeremy\'s friends from Paly showed up with "The Jeremy Lin Show" T shirts.
Lin\'s come a long, long way since. Â But at the time, he wasn\'t nearly ready.

My only grudge against Dawkins was the time he spent on the Olympics...I would probably do the same thing but it cost Stanford Basketball a year in recruiting and a good amount of coaching. Â But that\'s behind us and I think we have good times ahead.
I was never a Johnson fan...let\'s see how he does at LSU. Â As with T-rone, he might come to realize that he made a mistake.
