It's Official TV Viewers Love Stanford - Farm93 - 01-05-2012

Well, the year to year changes in TV ratings are not exactly proof of love, but they are still good to see.

The only one of the 4 BCS games to see a year over year ratings improvement was the game with Stanford on the field.  Ahhhh, feeling the love.  The BCS bowl game that had Stanford last year, saw its ratings fall >25%.

I'm kind of surprised that the Rose Bowl had a bigger TV draw than the Fiesta. I guess that's the power of the Rose Bowl.

Re: It's Official TV Viewers Love Stanford - pincemob - 01-05-2012

I am not surprised the Rose Bowl had such good ratings compared to other bowls.  For many people I know, it's the one bowl game they watch, along with the parade.  Especially people in L.A.  I do not recall the Rose Bowl ever being on cable (I thought in the past it was on ABC).  That could be a factor in why its ratings dipped this year, perhaps.

The fact that our bowl had a 40% surge in ratings when the other bowls were all down 20-30% says a lot.

I would in general have expected lower bowl ratings because of football fatigue (lots of NFL games the day before) and the fact that many workers did not get January 2nd as a holiday (perhaps that is part of the reason the evening Fiesta Bowl did relatively better--although I think that timeslot effect would be trumped by Stanford's outrageous appeal this year).

Re: It's Official TV Viewers Love Stanford - Farm93 - 01-05-2012

Rose Bowl is always #1.  It is the biggest of the BCS set.  And yet, a ratings point in prime time has more viewers, so total viewership for the Fiesta Bowl was very, very close to total viewership of the Rose Bowl.  Great news for the Pac-12 and Stanford.

FWIW - The media attention was clearly focused on the Fiesta Bowl too.  At Orange Bowl last night the endzone areas had very few media types.  And almost no one standing beyond the endline.  Compare that to the Fiesta Bowl where the media types were 2 and 3 deep along that endzone area in the 4th quarter and OT.

Hate to say it, but UConn didn't exactly create a "tough comp" for us, in terms of the % increase data.
