Welcome to Notre Dame, Tai-ler - Sue_Ann_Duckett - 07-17-2010

I\'ll bet a Stanford dorm looks pretty good compared to this.

So ... Never heard of THAT at Stanford.

I\'d like to hear from the more recent grads .... How is alcohol handled on campus these days?   Underage drinking was treated pretty laxly in my days and most handled that freedom pretty well although it took some a quarter or two to adjust to self-discipline vs imposed discipline.

I get the feeling under-age drinking oversight its still lax but perhaps not 80\'s lax.

It\'s easy to dismiss this as a situation of college kids doing college stuff.  But since this recently happened (http://bit.ly/be5Moy), you would think that they would be kind of sensitive at ND.

My impression is that it\'s been getting slightly stricter over the last few years, but where there are wills, there are ways.  Private, in-dorm, non-public (non-shared dorm space) drinking remains, of course, easiest to get away with.

Re: Welcome to Notre Dame, Tai-ler - Leftcoast - 07-17-2010

Sounds stricter - for better or worse.   In my 80\'s FROSH dorm most parties involved kegs in the common areas - usually procured by the RA\'s.

I\'m Class of 09, and we certainly drank quite a bit. Not so much with the kegs in common areas (that was banned for freshmen dorms), but basically everywhere else. I\'ve heard that some staffs were pretty strict about it, but as far as my experience is concerned, pure urban legend.

I remember being in charge of the keg for an hour in the common area during a WestFlo party... as a frosh.  Yes, I was SLE.

Whoa, they don\'t fool around at USB these days - JohnR34231 - 07-18-2010

I\'m sure that if every underage college football player who had a drink at a campus party were not allowed to play, they\'d have to cancel the upcoming season.

Cracking down on alcohol... - Mick - 07-18-2010

At SCU in the late \'70s, there was a death when a drunken student climbed up on top of the bubble roof at Toso Pavilion.  Until that time, I think the policy was fairly lax.  I entered as a frosh in 1980, and the official policy was to keep alcohol in your dorm room, and all should be okay, though they would serve a light amount of alcohol (beer wine) at university functions.

That seemed to work pretty well, until about 4 months in, the university president, Fr. William J. Rewak had occasion to visit the freshman dorm.  My girlfriend and I joined him on the ground floor elevator.  He was in civvies, so to speak, and looked very young, essentially unrecognizable.  There was pounding music, laughter, shouting, and the elevator opens on the second floor where an all-out party is blasting.  Six drunk frosh with beer cups get in the elevator.  The prez says icily..."having a party, boys?"  Not one of the six recognizes him, but all agree quite loudly that they are having a party, that it is a great party, a world class party, etc.

The prez gets out on the fifth floor, the rest of us get out on 11 (top floor).  Right before the door opens, one of the doofuses says, "Hey, I think that was Fr. Rewak!!"  All thought it very funny.

Next week, a new policy.  Alcohol only for seniors, and only in dorm rooms with door closed.  No alcohol served at university functions where ANY student will be president.  Kegs banned at off-campus housing.  Any RA (resident assistant) found accountable for a party would lose their job.  Sure, the students found ways around it.  But it was quite a crackdown.

I will say this, though...if you invited a Jesuit to a party, the odds were that they would be bringing something stronger than anything you were serving...

Back in the day my all-Frosh dorm had a line item in the budget for alcohol.  It was one of the largest line items, as I recall.  The budget enabled us to have one all-campus party each quarter and have enough for other dorm parties too.  The joke was that only 2 of the RAs were old enough to buy alcohol, and they did not have cars.

As the Frosh in charge of food purchases for the "pantry" and with a reliable vehicle, I made more than a few runs to RWC with the dorm team for alcohol purchases.  By the time I graduated the standard had certainly shifted quite a bit.

The good thing about Stanford is that almost everyone lives on-campus, can get home without a motor vehicle, and can walk home on paths without many autos.

It seems at other places a lot of problems emerge when people want to go home, but have to wait for their ride.  Then they get in trouble because they are waiting and still drinking when they knew they should get out.  Or they get in trouble riding with people they do not know, or stumbling home down busy streets, etc.

ND\'s situation seems far from unique, I would guess BYU would soar to #1 in many sports if every school suspended underage drinkers.  A few party goers with alcohol just does not match up to possession theft or club violence IMHO.

Re: Welcome to Notre Dame, Tai-ler - teejers1 - 07-19-2010

Donner Street Party my frosh year - we hosted a 65 keg party, and everyone and their mother (and daughter) showed up.  Or so it seemed.

Yeah, I think it\'s safe to say that things have changed.  And probably for the better . . . at least on the extreme bash front.  But damn, those non-fraternity all-campus affairs - Donner Street Party (Donner), Rincadelts (Rinconada), Splendor in the Grass (Manzanita/Trailers), and Beta Nooners (a frat, but not a weekend night event), etc. - were a lot of fun.

And it\'s also true that the geography of Stanford is somewhat unique and lessens the danger associated with drinking generally, as others have noted (i.e., people on campus can get home without driving).  In bigger schools with more commuting, you just can\'t have those kind of free for all parties.

Re: Welcome to Notre Dame, Tai-ler - fullmetal - 07-19-2010

I think the more the administration cracks down on general student drinking, the more the heavy drinking will concentrate in the fraternities/sororities, which tends to see heavier drinking.  I\'m not sure this is a good thing.

Re: Welcome to Notre Dame, Tai-ler - dabigv13 - 07-20-2010

I think my freshman year was the last one where Frosh houses had open campus dorm parties. Friends who visited me from USC, UCLA, or kal were in awe of how great of a party school Stanford was. You could walk anywhere, there wasn\'t a hassle to get in, and it was good sloppy drunk fun, with some Stanford quirkiness mixed in.

The administration definitely started to regulate more and more during my four years, but when I left it was still much more lax than any other school I\'ve visited.
