Totally unsurprising announcment by DeCastro... - socalstanfan1 - 01-04-2012

who tweeted this evening that he is headed for the NFL.  Thanks, David, for the great years, and best of luck in the NFL.  I'm actually hoping JH gets you with the Niners, even if he needs to trade a couple of picks to move up in the 1st round to do so.

Actually, lets make that both DeCastro and Martin.  Jonathan, thanks to you, too, for helping to build this program over the last three years.  I'm sure everyone here agrees that you both will make great pros, and will be enduring sources of pride for us all.

More importantly, who are going to be their replacements?  Josh Garnett and Kyle Murphy?

I had the opportunity to watch some games in person this year and got to do something you can't do watching a game on TV....focus on a particular player.  I loved watching DeCastro do his job.  What a force!  He would absolutely blow guys off the ball.  And he has to be the best big pulling guard I have ever seen.  The guy can motor for a big man.  Moose Martin was another gem.  Thanks and congratulations to both of them on incredible careers at Stanford.

That would be fantastic.  I just saw that Garnett will be here for the big recruit weekend in about 10 days.  I think Murphy will be here for that, too.

In all the excitement about this year's recruits, we shouldn't forget about the depth we already have on the roster.  Brendon Austin was a top-20 Offensive Tackle prospect who redshirted this year.  I would think that, as good as Murphy is, he might have to battle Austin, who has been in the program for a year, learning the playbook and no doubt beefing up in the weight room.  And at OG we have a bunch of great possibilities: Kevin Danser, Cole Underwood, Dillon Bonnell (another 4-star coming out of HS who has, I believe, suffered through some injury issues, but if he can get healthy could be good), Kevin Rheiner.  I think anyone coming in, even a stud like Garnett, is going to have to prove themselves against some stiff competition.

What a great problem to have for the coaches.  I cannot remember a time where we had such good depth on the OL.
