Manning vs Leaf redux? - george - 01-03-2012

Watching this ESPN video where 2 out of 3 analysts say RG3 is a better pick than Luck, I can't help but be reminded of what a lot of people said about Manning and Leaf.  The consensus was that Manning was the safer pick but that Leaf had more upside.  There seem to be similar themes going on in this (infuriating) video:

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7418801&categoryid=2378529

Kordell Stewart's assertion that RG3 is hands-down, bar-none the best QB in the nation because he won the Voldemort trophy is particularly bile inducing.  Interesting that Indianapolis once again gets to make the choice between the guy who's a consensus safe pick and the guy who's ability knows no bounds.  Maybe this time they go the other way and someone gets the deal of the century on AL as the second pick.

Regardless of whether he's picked first or not, I am immensely proud of Andrew Luck and they way he handles himself.  His reaction to the loss demonstrated the kind of class I could only hope to have in that situation.

Re: Manning vs Leaf redux? - FarmBoy - 01-03-2012

I guess it would be nice to add Andrew Luck's name to the list of Stanford's number one draft picks, but I honestly don't care what the pundits are saying. Luck is a great player who leaves beyond a great legacy. I hope he has a long and fruitful career in the NFL, but it won't take away from what he did on the Farm one iota if he's a complete flop.

As for that second video, I wanted to punch that reporter for her stupid questions about how he'd feel about sitting behind Manning or which team he'd like to go to. It was such asinine fishing for controversy, hoping he'll say that he wants to start right away and will only play for certain teams blah blah blah.

What a dork Skip Bayless is. I'm sure glad he isn't barfing all over the sports page of the Merc News any more.

Re: Manning vs Leaf redux? - nick pants - 01-03-2012

In my view, there have never been two better quarterbacks in a one/two finish in the Voldemort race than this year.

Both players, as was pointed out by Matt Millen, are as impressive off the field as they are on it, and this too is probably unique for that award. In fact, they closely resemble each other in many respects.

Each was asked to do certain things within the offensive schemes run by their coaches, and each did it superbly. There is no reason for the fans of either player to denigrate the other, as both are greatly deserving of their status. I would without hesitation take either as the keystone of my team, college or professional.

Re: Manning vs Leaf redux? - Farm93 - 01-03-2012

This is now the norm for the NFL pre-draft.  There are probably 6 to 10 teams that WANT Luck.  And amazingly, Indy may not be one of those teams.  So in an effort to discount Luck's value those 6 to 10 teams are trying hard to convince these "TV Experts" that RG3 is a decent second choice.  This implied value for RG3 would lower the cost for trading to get Luck.  If Miami had the #1 pick this Luck or RG3 thing would never even come up because everyone would know Miami was picking Luck.  Instead the conversation would be that RG3 may not be as good as QB #3.  Same pre-draft game, different scenario.

So the TV Experts are getting played a bit here, and because they need something to talk about they are happy to play along.

Very few fast QBs are fast after 4 years in the league, the proper franchise draft bet is Luck.  This is not to say that RG3 won't do well too, I suspect he will also have a strong NFL career.
