Maybe Stanford hit him SO HARD last season... - Redrum - 07-14-2010
that he\'s still concussed.  Most folks would believe a guy on the wrong end of 55-21 thumping might be a little mentally fuzzy and  forget things like personal culpability or even that he was anywhere near the scene of the crime.

too bad there is not further downside to USC appealing if they lose. Â

Pete Carroll rulebreaking we weren\'t previously aware of: he hired a coach too many for NCAA rules:

... but we were previously aware of this, WA=$ (after Garvin posted the exact same link to the same story a few posts above yours to start the thread). ;D
Seriously, I appreciate and certainly don\'t mean to discourage the effort. Just teasing!

Uh, yes. Excellent reading skills there displayed by me.
So, uh, how about that Pete Carroll? Worst human being ever or worse than that?

Hmmm, I think I would go the other way on this one. Pete was a great college football coach. Thanks in large part to his enthusiasm and his unique coaching style he was able to transform a program in decline into a national powerhouse. Over his tenure USC did very little to improve the playing facilities, the student-athlete resources, or the AD infrastructure for the eventual post-Pete era. And all of the issues that were obscured by Pete\'s personal style and unique winning formula will undoubtedly resurface.
In fact, as the NCAA noted several times, USC football was run by the HC with very little control or direction from the AD or the University. So there is very little reason to believe that USC will be able to replicate the football formula created and controlled by Pete.
Even without the probation, Kiffin was unlikely to repeat Pete\'s success. In some ways Kiffin is lucky because now he can blame his upcoming 4-8 to 7-5 type seasons on the NCAA ruling and/or Pete.

i remember the news stories written/filmed regarding his personal outreach toward inner-city youths...that does earn him some of my respect, although we do know that a lot of shady NCAA rules violations occurred under his watch.

He was a great game day coach. Â He had a great practice atmosphere. Â Some rules were broken along the way. Â That is all in the past. Â 5-star recruits should not assume that Kiffin=Carroll or that USC 2005 = USC 2015.
My guess is that without the probation the Kiffin USC era still would not be as fun for the players. Â Even with the same talent level I would guess the team could experience another loss or two per year.
Now, the NCAA has complicated the comparison equation. Â USC seems destined to change. Â Practices will not be as fun. Â The pre-NFL environment with the celebs and pro athletes cheering at practice will go away. Â Winning on Saturdays will not be so easy. Â Those old Coliseum seats and facilities will look a touch older to the player parents, etc.
The good news for Kiffin is that he will be able to blame the NCAA mess for any 6-6 type season that may develop.
