Gonna happen.  Might get worse - Redrum - 07-13-2010

UCLA has a LOT of recruiting advantages going for it.  Great weather. Pretty campus,  decent academic reputation,  great social/entertainment possibilities in LA and Westwood.   And Neuheisel is a very effective recruiter.   They have brought in two very good recruit classes.   If they get their line woes dealt with (and it looks like they\'re making progress as this article shows) and get a competent QB corps,  they will be very formidable on the field and in the recruiting wars.

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - ealtice - 07-13-2010

I\'m not sure how high a priority this player was for Stanford.  We are in the final two for Spencer Drango, a more highly rated tackle prospect, and already have Brendon Austin on board.  I imagine the coaches might be looking more toward DT, CB, TE, where we have more need.

Speaking of CBs, I just read in an article on Rivals that Ricky Seale is practicing at bot RB and CB this summer.

I think Kevin Reihner is our primary O/OG verbal.  Austin and Gladd are OG/OT types.  hopefully Drango and Joe join them.  that would be a very solid o-line haul for us.

I for one am very happy to hear that Ricky Seale appears likely to get a look at CB during camp. Would also like to see Keanu Nelson tried out there. It\'s hard to imagine either of those guys playing on offense in 2010, but they could definitely get on the field on defense, depending on how they perform, injuries, etc.

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - ealtice - 07-13-2010

Hope I don\'t jinx this, but I would think that with Erin Joe, Chris Bryant, and Spencer Drango, all having us in their among their finalists at this point, and already having verbals from Austin, Gladd, and Reihner, we should be in pretty good shape along the OL for this recruiting cycle.  Recall also that last year Cameron Fleming\'s verbal came out of the blue after he had already committed elsewhere, so who know if there is interest elsewhere that the recruiting sites are missing.

I agree about Seale and Nelson getting looks in the defensive backfield.  This is really a no-lose situation for us, I think:  if those guys are good enough on the offensive side of the ball to earn playing time right away, then we have some great weapons.  If not, they both might be upgrades in the defensive backfield.  Either way, we come ever closer to matching the athleticism of a lot of the other elite teams around the country.

I\'ll concede that Nelson and Seale might have a better chance at PT this year on defense, rather than offense.  However, I maintain that Stanford has talent in the secondary, including CB.  I like Gatewood, Sherman, Quinn Evans and Bademosi.

Stanford needs to coach \'em up!

And because we can\'t pass up an opportunity - Redrum - 07-13-2010

...to harrass His Royal Ungratefulness,  we oughta\'  make him come into the football offices on LOI day and watch the LOIs from O-Line come in on the fax machine.   "See, Ty?  This is how it\'s supposed to be.  LOTS of O-line commitments."

And then he could go play some golf.  While right now I ask the Gods of Woofing not to punish us for my impertinent assumptions of success.

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - slide - 07-13-2010

interesting quote from Brendel:

"I really can\'t answer that question," Brendel said. "I can\'t tell the future; right now I\'m very, very excited about a chance to go to UCLA and play football. But there are schools out there that I\'m more excited about. Those schools really aren\'t an option for me right now. But if they do become an option, things might change. Really, there\'s always an option. Right now, it\'s only words. There\'s no paperwork."

Northwestern?  Texas?  Stanford?

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - fullmetal - 07-13-2010

Maybe he\'s alluding to admissions, with "...really aren\'t an option for me right now."

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - ealtice - 07-13-2010

Or, given the comment about the "limited number of spots" he might be alluding to a school, like Stanford, that has already filled up their number of commits, unless someone should stumble on the admissions process, or decide to go somewhere else.

Re: We lose a football recruiting battle - slide - 07-14-2010

Brendel liked Northwestern but they are only taking 3 OL this year and they have 3 verbals already.  Texas and Stanford were just speculation on my part.

I agree with Teejers that we have some DBs who can play well (Sherman, Gatewood, MT3, Howell, etc).  they just need to be more consistent, particularly in their tackling and field awareness.
