MBB: 2026-27 Season -

The Tree fell in Santa Clara, but apparently no one was there to hear (or see) it?
According to gostanford.com, Stanford MBB played an exhibition game against Santa Clara on Saturday and lost 83-78. Looking at the box score, I'm guessing the fact the Broncos had five fewer turnovers and five more rebounds might have been the difference. Stanford did shoot 46 (!) free throws, making 37.
The top scorer for Stanford was highly touted freshman guard Julius Price, who was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden but matriculated from Saint Joseph High School in Santa Maria, CA. JP made 5-11 FG, 1-3 3-pt and 15-19 FT for 26 points in 34 minutes.
Santa Clara is the preseason favorite to win the Gonzaga-less West Coast Conference. Also, ESPN Bracketology has pegged the Broncos as a 12-seed playing in Sacramento. Which is my way of saying that Stanford held its own against a good mid-major team.
As I'm sure folks know, this year the NCAA tournament expands to 76 teams. Is this the year the Cardinal break through and earn an invitation to the Big Dance?
Stanford next plays an exhibition game at Oregon on Sunday afternoon.

I think having Nick Townsend who won his appeal today at least for now sure helps. Coach Smith is a master at doing more with less. We will break through one of these years.

Interior defense was a weak area for Stanford last year. Stanford gave up 18 offensive rebounds to Santa Clara. So yes, I think a guy who is 6'7", 240 pounds could make a difference for the Cardinal.

I don't know how good SCU is going to be. They graduated or lost (Graves, #19 overall NBA draft) four of their five top players from last year and five of their nine rotation players, about 85% of their scoring offense. Given their 32 fouls and 46 free throws given up, I'm guessing that Coach Herb Sendek is coaching hard on defense and they're not quite getting it yet.
Pretty evenly matched game, I thought Stanford looked really good. Hope Stanford kills it in the ACC this year...

Thanks for the first-hand witness, Mick. I've never understood why Stanford and Santa Clara don't play more often during the regular season.

Once again Stanford is outrebounded and has more turnovers than its opponent. Good thing these first two games don't count!
FWIW (not much), Oregon is #79 according to the kenpom.com preseason rankings, 15th in the 18-team B1G. Santa Clara, who beat Stanford a few days ago is #92.
Stanford is #67 according to kenpom.com, 11th in the 18-team ACC. If that ranking counted and stood--neither of these are true--67th would not be good enough to make the expanded NCAA tournament field.
To pass the time until our first "real" game on Nov. 2, here are the kenpom.com rankings of our nonconference opponents:
vs #151 Eastern Washington
vs #199 Oakland
vs #237 Rice
@ #78 UNLV
vs #110 UC Irvine
vs #189 Sac State
neutral #86 Colorado (Acrisure tournament in Palm Desert, CA)
neutral #44 Grand Canyon or #54 St. Louis (Acrisure tournament in Palm Desert, CA
vs #179 Portland
@ #19 Texas A&M (SEC/ACC Challenge) @ 6:15 pm Pacific time
vs #137 Pacific
vs #188 Northern Colorado
vs #154 San Jose State
vs #172 Saint Thomas
