POLL: First 2026-2027 Athletic Year NCAA Championship - Leftcoast - 10-06-2026

I enjoyed our poll last year covering which sport would accomplish our first National Championship for the year.  With that in mind, here's the 2026-2027 version.

Keep in mind that the board allows a maximum of 10 choices so apologies if I left out your choice.  If you want to vote for a non-included sport (Women's Water Polo?, Women's Field Hockey?, Men's Volleyball?) please drop it in the comments. Several Spring sports should probably displace some of the earlier sports.

No Football or Men's Basketball?

I see that Men's Polo has taken the early lead, hope it doesn't jinx anything. . ..

Yeah, it's not going to be men's volleyball...

I'm going with Men's Gymnastics, women's golf close second, MWP third.

Lefty, I started that poll last year and, as I recall, received some pushback for tempting the woofing gods as angst grew with each passing month and no championship.

Having said that, I'm picking women's soccer.

I voted for men's WP, probably swayed by the recent road sweep of LA.

But my prediction is that this is the year the streak breaks.

I'm going with Women's soccer.  Just for the "fun" of it.
They are certainly talented enough to pull it off.
But I do recognize that winning the soccer tourney is kinda like the complicated expectation of winning March madness or the World Cup.
The teams near the top are all really good and to the point that anyone having a good day, versus an opponent having a slightly off day, makes a crucial and unpredictable difference.
So it takes a bit of "luck" to win it all.
By luck meaning that you are somehow able to bring your A game every game, and your opponents don't.
I think the more logical and practical choice is MWP.
I think the woofing gods have put me on mute, so I don't think I'm jinxing anyone.

I'm excited for all these teams.  I only recently realized the shift in MWP recruiting philosophy from Coach Vargas to Coach Flacks (as of 2022), and I think that puts Stanford on an even more competitive footing.  I don't know enough to say whether it was necessary, but we'll see if it pays off.  Flacks' first championship for Stanford is only a matter of time.

Well, I liked it and perhaps we’ve earned some slack from the woofing gods after a football season of no woofing (a sadly appropriate fan response)

I chose MWP along with the majority.  I’m also optimistic for women’s golf but hope it doesn’t take that long!

When was the last time we won a title in the fall?  Feels like the last few years we’ve had to wait until the spring.

2019 - men's water polo and women's soccer

Not since 2019 women's volleyball, if memory serves.

One has to look at the question closely.

If the question is "When did Stanford last win a (NCAA?) championship in the fall?", then 2019 WVB on Dec. 20, 2019.
If the question is "What year did Stanford last win a (NCAA?) championship in the fall?", then 2019 MWP on Dec. 8, 2019.
If the question is "When did Stanford last win a (NCAA?) championship other than a spring sport?", then 2026 MGym on Apr. 18, 2026.
If the question is "When did Stanford last win a (NCAA?) championship other than in the spring?", then ???

I don't guarantee those answers are accurate.
