2026-27 Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 09-14-2026

Stanford women's golf puts last year's national championship behind it as they begin a new season today at the limited field Jackson T Stephens Cup. Only 6 teams, all of whom are considered top 10-15 in the country. The teams play 36 holes of stroke play today and 18 more tomorrow. The top 2 teams then face off in match play for the championship on Wednesday. 

Even with 3 returning All Americans, it's definitely going to be a different experience for Stanford women's golf this year because they are starting off in dead last. They finished the morning round 24 strokes behind leader South Carolina. Andrea Revuelta, the #1 ranked women's amateur in the world, shot 75 which included a quadruple bogey on a par 5. Paula Martin Sampedro, the #2 ranked women's amateur in the world, shot 79. 

Of course, almost the entirety of the season is still to come. It's also easy to dismiss fall results when a team might still be figuring out its lineup and players are working on specific aspects of their games. But Stanford dominated last year from beginning to end. It will be a different story this year. 

If you want to watch, Golf Channel is broadcasting this afternoon from 2 to 5 pm pacific and tomorrow from 1 to 4 pm. The coverage will also include the men's competition which does not include Stanford.

Martin Sampedro, Ortengren and Revuelta are 3 of the top 5 amateurs in the world. But they are not playing like it. Their consistency has been a hallmark of their games but their scores have been all over the place this fall. Competitive burnout?

Anna Song was humming along then blew up on the front 9 today.

Frosh Nikki Oh was the most consistent with rounds of 73-71-71. 

The team has 2 more tournaments in the fall season - one at Stanford and one in Hawaii. Then they are off until February.

First rankings of the season have come out. Based on results so far, Stanford is 12th. Wake Forest is #1. Individually, Meja Ortengren is 5th, Andrea Revuelta is 89th. No one else in the top 100. 

The Cardinal has a chance to improve that position this weekend as it hosts the Stanford Intercollegiate Friday-Sunday. The field includes USC, Virginia and UCLA, all of whom are ranked above Stanford. If you are in the area, drop by the course.

Well, through Saturday Stanford sits comfortably in first at -24, 12 strokes clear of second place Virginia.  USC is third at even par and no one else is below par.  On the individual leaderboard, Meja Örtengren and Andrea Revuelta are 1-2 at -10 and -9, respectively, with Anna Song in a tie for third at -8.  Nora Sundberg, competing as an independent individual is tied for 7th at -4, Leigh Chien and Kaila Elsayegh (also competing as independents individuals) are T11 and T13.  Yes, we have three scorers not counting who would have been the best or second best scorer for pretty much every other team!

Stanford runs away with the tournament, ending with a -28, an 18 stroke win over Virginia, and 21 strokes over third place USC.  No other team finished below par.

On the individual leaderboard, Örtengren and Revuelta finished 1-2 at -14 and -11, respectively, with Song finishing fifth at -7, Sundberg competing as an independent individual finishing in a tie for 7th at -5, Elsayegh (IND) finishing Even in a tie for 15th, Jude Lee (IND) finishing in a tie for 18th, Leigh Chien (IND) finishing in a tie for 21, Martín Sampedro finishing in a tie for 31, and Nikki Oh finishing in a tie for 47th.

The ranking was/is determined by a computer formula that only considers actual tournament results. No human assessment involved. So the ranking you have is one that you earned. Stanford will move up when the rankings are next updated on Wednesday. 

Meja Ortengren has played well through the fall. She is the clear #1 player for Stanford right now. It was good to see Andrea Revuelta play well too. She had an uncharacteristic 78 in the final round of the last tournament in Chicago. The mystery right now is Paula Martin Sampedro. She is the #3 ranked amateur in the world but has not broken par in any of the 9 rounds she has played this season. After a trip to Hawaii for the final fall tournament, she will have almost 4 months to work things out (or to rest up) before the spring season begins.

There is a fierce competition for the final 2 spots on the team. Frosh Nikki Oh and sophomore Anna Song have played all 3 tournaments so far. But Nora Sundberg, Jude Lee, Kaila Elsayegh and Leigh Chien all finished top 16 at the Stanford tournament as individuals. I hope that competition continues into the spring. Iron sharpens iron.

Add - Stanford clearly has a home course advantage. They play very well on Stanford GC. Oh look, Stanford GC will be hosting an NCAA regional this coming spring.
