2026 Stanford vs. Hawaii Predictions Thread - george - 08-22-2026

New season, new coach, new predictions rules.  I've also had claude assist me in adding some emoji style voting for the nicknames, so buckle up, it may get a bit rocky.  

I'm expecting that there might be some jank with the widget because of the board software update and hosting migration, but I'm committed to getting it working.

Now let's get after Hawaii!  If the amount of traffic talking about the team is any indication of how this season is going to go, feels like it's going to be. a rough ride.  Luckily most of us have been fans of this team forever, so it will be just like old times.

Last year was UH 23-20, home game for UH. I'm going with Stanford 27, Hawaii 23, for the following reasons:

  1. Flip game from Honolulu to Stanford home game
  2. Hawai‘i returns Alejado
  3. Harris transferred to LSU
  4. Ashlock injured/questionable
  5. Hawai‘i returns only 3 defensive starters
  6. Stanford's more experienced OL/run game
  7. Warren uncertainty
  8. Stanford coaching/defensive changes
  9. Four-man front, better DC at Stanford

I think we rush for 250 yards plus, throw for less than 250, defense plays strong.

Yeah the shame / red hot calculation has always been borked immediately when you make your prediction. But if you refresh the thread, it will be right. Eventually I’ll address this.

Sigh...thanks, George...that would be a diabolical plan. I genuinely think Hawaii is winnable and that the good guys in Cardinal will win.

Fwiw, this is the Stanford part of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s season prediction. They are predicting a UH loss. 

Predictions call for another winning UH football season

Last year we correctly predicted Hawaii’s first winning football season since 2020 but shortchanged the Warriors a couple of wins.

After a 50-50 first half of this season, mostly because UH will be punching up on the road against power conference teams, look for a very strong stretch run and a shot at the Mountain West championship, especially if Hawaii remains healthy at key positions.

Game 1

at Stanford

Saturday

Hawaii dealt Stanford its first of eight losses last year to go with its four wins, as the teams opened against each other at the T.C. Ching Complex.

Michigan transfer Davis Warren is expected to start at quarterback. Warren was out last year with a knee injury but started much of the 2024 season, passing for 1,199 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions for the Wolverines.

Coach Tavita Pritchard and his staff are also big additions. Pritchard, who was most recently quarterbacks coach with the Washington Commanders, replaces interim head coach Frank Reich. In a previous stint at Stanford, Pritchard was offensive coordinator, and he is credited with landing Christian McCaffrey.

Micah Ford, who rushed for 113 yards and a score against UH, is back.

Kris Richard is the new defensive coordinator who will try to improve a unit that allowed 408 yards per game last season. Tevarua Tafiti didn’t do much against the Warriors last season, but the edge player has been one of the Stanford’s best defenders for two seasons.

All four of the Cardinal wins came at home last season, where they lost only to Pitt and No. 9 Notre Dame.

I approach this season predictions with about as much confidence as expecting a nice water park experience going over niagara falls in an inner tube.
That being said, I'll predict our defense is improved over last year and holds Hawaii's challenging offense to just 17 points.
While our offense has some success with a couple TD's but yet more impressive with some several long field goal kicks, to reach 26 points.
Beating the ESPN spread of Stanford by 5.5.
I'd be willing to bet my first born son on the outcome (notably, I only have daughters).

Watched Coach's fall camp week 4 video, pretty good optimism as expected.
But I've pledged to force down 1 shot of castor oil for every mention of "the Process" in Coach's video's, and heard 1 this week, so I'm annoyed but glad it's not worse. If I hear "trust the Process" it results in an extra bonus shot.
He made one comment I never heard before: "Football has a 100% injury rate"
In regards to explaining it's unrealistic to expect no injuries, he is to try to manage them when they happen.

I attended all three.  

We are past just "rooting for your school" -- that was 20th Century.
... "Go Card" is useless -- instead, THINK! 

1) How many Linemen are making NIL?
That's where we need to spend some money... Tunnel Workers Union.
Go back and look at the Linemen of the 2009-2016 teams. 

2) Stanford Endowment is $36B+, and the Brad Freeman money ($50M).  Do some math.

3) We've got Nobel Prize winners in Math and Science and AI... but we can't figure out the NIL Game?  C'mon!  THINK!  Crank it out. 

Where are we?  How much NIL is being earned by Stanford players each year now?  
HOW MUCH?  WHO?  WHY?  
Do you want to get back to a Bowl, or just "try hard"?  Anyone...

I feel really good about this one. Maybe it is the beginning of the season optimism but 

Last year we were the better team against Hawaii despite the loss. A lot of returning players this year unlike previous years where we have dealt with an exodus of talent. 

I expect QB play to be better this year under Pritchard. 

Ford will return the running game back to the 2010s production we saw. 

OLine should see improvement with Terry and returners. 

Defense has good talent coming in and some young and upcoming coaches. 

While not competing for an ACC title, I do expect this team to catch some schools (Miami) off guard.

just not sure I can trust it yet.

on #2, the AD in their last annual report with actual numbers getting somewhere in the area of $40m-$50m a year from the University (probably more as the $40m-$50m was before the reduction in TV money from joining the ACC).  At least some of Freeman's gift is for endowing scholarships (I think it was six), if all of it is endowing things the $50m will throw off ~$2.5m/year.  The AD is apparently using the full allowed House payments (~$20m), I'd assume $15m is going to football.
