MBB: Stanford 75 Bethune-Cookman 56 - washingtonismoney - 12-19-2011

Ignore the final margin--Stanford piled it on late. Stanford drifted through a lackluster second half, with B-C getting within 6, before finally pulling away, due largely to comprehensive foul trouble. The other part was Chasson Randle, who played a very assured game, with two long buzzer-beater shots.

The defense in the second half lacked intensity and offensively, other than Brown and Randle, lacked something. In some ways it was useful practice for the team, as B-C switched up defenses frequently, but a full court press once again flustered the team to some degree. However, their various halfcourt zones were dealt with fairly easily, particularly in the first half.

I suppose a decent chunk of the blame can be laid on post-finals rust and disinterest in a mediocre opponent. At least, I hope so: the team must improve dramatically if it wants to cause ripples in the Pac-12.

Re: MBB: Stanford 75 Bethune-Cookman 56 - burger - 12-20-2011

I was dismayed at the number of turnovers last night: 9 in the first half and 13 overall.  We had 17 turnovers on Saturday night, and I saw someplace that we've turned the ball over on 21% of our possessions this year.  Despite the good defense and the good record so far this year, turnovers are going to be what holds this team back.  We have a tendency to force the ball and to make stupid plays (last night Randle and another player missed a handoff in the backcourt with no defenders around).  If the turnovers don't improve, it's going be a problem against Pac-12 teams, who will have bigger and more athletic defenders than we've seen so far.

On a per possession basis (which is the right way to look at it), we're 201st in the country in turnovers.  We're turning the ball over even more than last year.  I know that we're a young team, and hopefully things will settle down.  But right now, I think that turnovers are our biggest problem as a team.
